Content Abstract: Frank J. Bosshardt was a prominent San Antonio, Texas attorney and property owner. He was active in local San Antonio politics and served as Bexar County Commissioner. He was also a notary public and President of the Medina Highlands Toll Road Association. The Frank J. Bosshardt Papers comprise various legal documents from the late 19th and early 20th centuries, created both by Bosshardt and fellow San Antonio attorney Horace Shelton. These materials help to document the geographic and economic growth of San Antonio during this period.

Content Abstract: David Bowen was a publisher, bookseller, teacher and an actor. Bowen was also a member of various Texas literary and civic groups. Correspondence, financial material and other records relating to the business and personal activities of bookseller and publisher David Bowen. The bulk of the papers concern Corona Publishing Company, the small press founded by Bowen in San Antonio, Texas, and documents the challenges facing small publishers in the 1980s and 1990s. Bowen's involvement with HemisFair '68 is prominent in the collection.

Content Abstract: The North Alamo City Business and Professional Women's Club (BPW) was established in 1968, an official chartered club of the Texas Federation of Business and Professional Women and National Federation of Business and Professional Women. Among the club's achievements was the establishment of their Career Awareness Program, the first inaugurated by a state club. Additionally, the club presented annual scholarships and hosted annual educational seminars for women. The collection spans the years 1953 through 1992 (with the bulk of materials dating 1968-1992) and documents the establishment, functions, and district-wide, statewide, national, and international involvement of the North Alamo City Business and Professional Women's Club. The bulk of the collection is comprised of materials generated by the Texas and National Federations of Business and Professional Women, including newsletters, conference materials, and general procedural guides and manuals.

Content Abstract: The four generations of Gresham and Negley family members represented in this collection include William B. Negley, Susan Maria Jones Negley, William B. Negley, Richard Van Wyck Negley, Sr., William Walter Negley, Rose Gertrude Negley Gresham, Rupert Neely Gresham, Sr., Rupert Neely Gresham, Jr., and Susan Maria Jones Gresham Crudgington Davidge. Most family members lived and worked in San Antonio, Texas during the bulk of the 20th century. The collection spans the years 1845 through 2003 (with the bulk of materials dating 1885-1917 and includes correspondence between four generations of family members, photographs, business papers, household receipts, postcard albums, and scrapbooks. Collectively these papers show the family ties that the family maintained over more than 100 years, as well as social and business relationships that the family maintained in San Antonio.

Content Abstract: Henry Patrick Drought was born in 1858 in County Clare, Ireland. He eventually settled in San Antonio, Texas to take the Bar examination and establish a law practice. Drought became the attorney for Francis Smith, Caldwell and Company, the San Antonio branch of an investment firm that acted as a financial liaison between Texas farmers and ranchers seeking money to expand their land and agriculture operations, and British and Scottish financiers who had money to lend and were looking for greater returns on their investments than European markets could. Drought purchased the company with Francis Smith, and after Smith's retirement, the company came to be known as H. P. Drought and Company. Under his guidance, the company became one of the most successful investment firms in San Antonio. Prior to his death, Drought's son, Henry Patrick Drought, Jr., became a partner. The collection consists of mortgage investment records made between the company and local and international investors from 1884 to 1969. These records include financial ledgers, correspondence, abstracts of title, and contracts documenting mortgage and loan transactions. Of note are descriptions of property and the names of investors, landowners, and businesses in San Antonio, Texas.

The success of her nightclub businesses was credited to her total commitment to the San Antonio Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual and Transgender community, which made up the majority of her customer base. Lollie was also active in local community groups. The papers include newspaper clippings, correspondence, printed materials, photographs, negatives, a small notebook, a wooden plaque for the Hypothesis Club, menus, programs, t-shirts, shoes, caps, a stained glass window from the Noo Zoo Company, Teleservice Resources records, Lollie’s résumé and her obituary.

The business developed into a popular statewide department store chain with 26 locations in Texas. The business ended when it was purchased by Dillard's in 1987. The records reflect a small portion of the general business functions of the flagship Joske's department store in San Antonio. The collection is mostly composed of financial and administrative records.

Content Abstract: Joske’s Quarter Century Club was created by the company as a way to thank 25-year veteran workers with free monthly breakfasts, jewelry and a 25% discount. The Club has brought former employees of Joske’s together since 1933. Even after the store shut down, the Joske’s Quarter Century Club kept going, bringing employees back for socials and luncheons two to three times per year. The Club disbanded in 2012 and held its final meeting at Trinity Lutheran Church on December 1, 2012. The collection consists of: 5 photograph albums; a scrapbook; a brief history of Joske’s; 8 copies of Joske’s Jabberwocky, the employee newsletter; an employee handbook; a Sterling Sales employee card; and a Joske’s ChargaPlate.

She purchased Uncle Ben's Barbecue restaurant with her husband in 1946, which developed into Catering by Rosemary, a successful catering business that eventually grew into a full service event planning company, The RK Group. The papers contain correspondence, photographs, clippings, appointment calendars, awards, audiovisual recordings, and electronic records pertaining to Kowalski's personal life, the history of her catering business, and her involvement in the community.

Content Abstract: James Morgan (1787-1866) was a Texas pioneer, merchant, land speculator and Commander at Galveston during the Texas Revolution (1835-1836). He first came to Texas in 1830. In 1834, during the feverish era of speculation just prior to the Texas Revolution, Morgan organized an ambitious land venture called the New Washington Association. The collection is comprised of twenty-eight documents and letters. All but two of the documents were written before 1841. Most of the documents are related to Morgan and the establishment of the New Washington Association. Many of the documents bear Morgan’s own notes and docketing; some of them are his drafts or retaining copies.

Content Abstract: Businesses that Built San Antonio was published in 1985 by Living Legacies in anticipation of the approaching 1986 Texas Sesquicentennial. The text of the book is based on oral history interviews with more than 50 business spokespeople. The collection is comprised of the source material for the book. Included are oral history interviews and transcripts, company histories, correspondence and assorted printed material.

Content Abstract: The Pierre Duval Hair Studio was opened by Jesse Duval Arrambide and Robert Pierre Teander in San Antonio, Texas in the early 1970s. For their collaboration with the Fiesta Dinner Playhouse in San Antonio, Jesse and Robert became known as the "hairdressers to the stars." In addition to visiting actors appearing at the Fiesta Dinner Playhouse, many Fiesta queens and their families relied on Pierre Duval Hair Studio. The bulk of the collection consists of albums containing photographs and playbills from the Fiesta Dinner Playhouse, autographed stills of actors, as well photographs taken at the home of Jesse and Robert.

Content Abstract: William Louis and Emma Frances Solcher Richter opened the first Richter's Bakery in downtown San Antonio, Texas in 1882. In 1912, W.L. Richter expanded business again when he bought the Butter Krust franchise. Eventually, Richter built a modern plant to accommodate increased demand. By 1920, Richter had built another plant across the street, which was able to produce 110,000 to 150,000 loaves a day. The Richter's Bakeries corporation was dissolved in 1997. The Richter's Bakery collection consists of photographs, microfilms, and a written history of the San Antonio bakery and its proprietors, William Louis Richter and Emma Solcher Richter.

Content Abstract: The San Antonio Hispanic Chamber of Commerce is the oldest organization of its type in the United States, having been originally chartered by five local businessmen from Bexar County as the Mexican Chamber of Commerce on May 31, 1929. Its purpose was to encourage and promote trade and cultural relations between San Antonio and Mexico, to disseminate data and information relevant to the San Antonio business community, and to provide technical assistance to the business community in the form of seminars, workshops, and trade shows. In 1987 the Mexican Chamber was renamed the San Antonio Hispanic Chamber of Commerce. In the early 1990's the Hispanic Chamber was recognized as a critical component in negotiating the many compromises which made NAFTA possible. In recent years the chamber's role has broadened to include advocacy on behalf of small, minority- and woman-owned businesses. The San Antonio Hispanic Chamber of Commerce Records include materials that reflect the history, work and policies of the Chamber between 1931 and 2008. Content Abstract: The San Antonio Women's Chamber of Commerce (SAWCC) is an affiliate of the Women's Chamber of Commerce of Texas (WCCT), the first state statewide women's chamber of commerce in the United States. Like the WCCT the SAWCC is a non-profit organization whose mission is to promote growth and economic development of women and to achieve the integration of women into leadership roles within the social, political, and economic structures of the public and private spheres of society. The collection consists of board records, and documents related to projects, programs, and issues of concern. There is also a small section devoted to peripheral information about the larger state organization. The largest portion of the records in this collection are devoted to the organization's various programs and issues of concern such as providing women access to leadership roles within the social and political communities of San Antonio. Ephemera and videocassettes are also included in the collection.

The bulk of the collection represents the office files of Tom Slick and includes correspondence, reports, financial documents, minutes, project and subject files spanning from 1938-1962.

Content Abstract: Stewart Title Company was a company that abstracted land titles. It was founded in the 1890s in Galveston, Texas, by Maco Stewart. The Stewart family incorporated under the name Stewart Title Guaranty Company in 1908 and two years later opened an office in Dallas. In 1911, the Stewarts established an office in San Antonio by leasing and later purchasing Bexar Abstract Company's records. Stewart Title Company went on to expand outside of Texas beginning in 1956. The Stewart Title Company Records are, in part, a compilation of the land records obtained by Stewart Title Company as a result of its acquisition of Bexar Abstract Company in 1911. The records also include the company's own land records which were built upon those acquired from 1911 forward. Additionally, there are some administrative and client records that were maintained by both Stewart Title and its parent companies.

Content Abstract: The Institute of Texan Cultures Oral History Collection originated from a regional meeting of the Texas Historical Commission held in Bandera, TX in 1973 calling for the creation of an oral history program to document the history of San Antonio and Bexar County. The collection consists of 900+ interviews conducted since 1967 and document a broad range of activities related to life in Texas.

Content Abstract: The John William Warren Papers are composed primarily of correspondence but also include legal documents. Portions of these documents are in the Spanish language. The legal documents cover the period from 1902 to 1948. Included within the papers is Autos de General Visita de Orcasitas, a handwritten document from 1768. The John William Warren Papers represent Texas business relations with Mexico in the early twentieth century.

Content Abstract: Richard Leigh Watkins was born circa 1878 and raised in Tennessee. Between 1910 and 1911 Watkins was business manager for the Beeville Manufacturing Company. Also in 1910 Watkins and five other men formed the Texas Title Guaranty Company. Watkins was active in a variety of associations and clubs in San Antonio, and in 1910 was one of the vestry of St. Mark’s Church. The papers consist of the papers of this San Antonio lawyer and reflect both his social and business life.

Content Abstract: Israel Worsham lived in Montgomery County in the Republic of Texas, served in the Texas legislature (1855-1856) and the Montgomery County Home Guard during the Civil War. In 1867, he wrote the description of Montgomery County for the Texas Almanac. The collection contains papers of Israel Worsham and his immediate family, and those of his great-great-granddaughter, Ella K. Daggett Stumpf, which deal with her research on Israel Worsham. Israel Worsham's papers, which are largely financial, are divided into seven series: Correspondence, Slave Sales, Financial Records, Political Involvement, Military and Veteran Records, Employment Agreements with Freedmen, Council of Laborers, and Election Administration Records. The papers of Jeremiah Worsham and other family members are correspondence.
