Content Abstract: The Air Force Women Officers Associated was founded in 1975 by Norma Breedlove and other retired Air Force women officers as a way to preserve the friendships and camaraderie they enjoyed while on active duty. It has grown considerably since then, and now offers membership to active duty, reserve, and separated women officers of the Air Force as well as retired officers. While the Air Force Women Officers Associated still fosters comradeship and friendships, the organization decided in 2000 to become more issue-orientated. The AFWOA focuses on interest issues concerning military women, such as promotional opportunities and education. The records of the Air Force Women Officers Associated document the organization's business, functions, and reunion planning. The collection consists of correspondence, administrative records, manuals, printed materials, photographs, and scrapbooks.

Content Abstract: Norfleet Giddings Bone, born in 1892, was a landscape designer and civil engineer, serving in World War II in the United States Army Air Corps. He served as the Supervising Landscape Architect and Landscape Engineer for Randolph Air Force Base (San Antonio, Texas), which was created as a training base for pilots. During this time, he also supervised the landscape design at Barksdale Air Force Base in Shreveport, Louisiana. Bone worked for the Army Corps of Engineers in their San Antonio District Office during World War II. While with the Army Corps of Engineers, Bone was responsible for maintaining the landscaping and grassing of the flying fields at bases around Texas. After World War II, Bone moved back to Austin and worked with the Texas State Parks Board until his retirement in 1963. The collections spans the years 1917 through 1980 and contains correspondence, photographs, reports, specifications, maps, drawings, newsclippings, plant lists, and blueprints that document the life and work of a twentieth century landscape architect and civil engineer.

Content Abstract: Anne Bufton, born in 1899, rose to national prominence through her dedication to helping others through community service. Claiming she was 18, Bufton joined the Women's Royal Naval Air Service during World War I in 1915. She was a 30-year member, and past president (1962-1964) of the Women's Overseas Service League, a national organization of women who served overseas during times of military conflict. The collection consists of an image of Anne Bufton in uniform on a train departing from Merheim, Germany in 1919, and an August 8, 2000 article from the Camas-Washougal Post-Record newspaper on Bufton's life.

Content Abstract: Margaret Bridget Duggan was commissioned in the United States Air Force in 1963 and served overseas in Okinawa, Japan, and Thailand. From 1975-1977, she was commander of a basic military training squadron at Lackland Air Force Base in Texas. In 1977, Margaret Duggan was sent to Iran to integrate women into the Iranian armed forces, but had to flee in 1979 when the Shah of Iran was overthrown. She retired from the Air Force in 1982. The bulk of this collection is comprised of awards, photographs, scrapbooks, and correspondence.

Content Abstract: Harold O. Lee enlisted in the armed forces after the bombing of Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941. He trained at Scott Field, Illinois, and later went to Europe and Africa to fight in World War II. Collection contains correspondence to and from Harold Lee, his parents, friends, and the War Department, as well as an autobiographical reminiscence, and a few photographs and newspaper clippings. The letters date from 1930 to 1990. The majority of the correspondence ranges from 1942 to 1945, consisting of Harold's letters to his parents chronicling his adventures and misadventures.

Richard Negley founded Negley Paint Company and was director of Alamo National Bank in San Antonio. The couple had 3 sons, two of whom lost their lives in World War II. The collection primarily consists of correspondence between Laura Burleson Negley and her immediate family members. These papers show the social and business ties that the family maintained in San Antonio, and illustrate the etiquette and social customs of the time. The papers also personalize the war experience (WWII) and its impact on families in San Antonio.

She served as president of the New York unit of the Women's Overseas Service League and in 1967, Petri was elected national president of the organization. During the late1940s, Petri served as president of the overseas division of the National Council of Catholic Women. Content Abstract: Daniel Salinas was one of the first Mexican-Americans to enlist in the Army Air Force in 1942, at the age of 21. After completion of his military training he was sent to Italy where he flew 76 missions during World War II. Upon returning to the United States he married Ana Maria Salinas and moved to San Antonio, Texas; they lived there for a short time before returning to Laredo, Texas. After moving back to Laredo, Daniel Salinas worked for his uncle at Salinas Department Store. He eventually went on to open his own store, Salinas Variety Store. He also worked as an accountant for three firms in Laredo. The Daniel Salinas Papers span the years 1937-1999 (with the bulk of the materials dating 1943-1945) and is comprised of military and personal papers. Materials include photographs, correspondence, training manuals, government documents, yearbooks, obituary notices, newspaper clippings, postcards, records of business transactions, and a Certificate of Baptism.

Content Abstract: Herbert John Spiro was a noted educator in political science, a U.S. ambassador, and a candidate for public office. Spiro spent over a decade as a member of the faculty at Harvard, and taught political science at Amherst College and the University of Pennsylvania and published thirteen books on government. From 1970-1975, Spiro was a senior member of the policy planning staff at the U.S. State Department, and under President Ford became ambassador to Equatorial Guinea and Cameroon. Correspondence, course work, notes, papers, classified files, audio and videotapes, photographs, literary manuscripts, and printed materials spanning 1946-1994 document Herbert J. Spiro's education and teaching career, military service, government service, and involvement in politics and political campaigns. The bulk of the collection consists of academia office files, correspondence, course notes and lecture notes from Spiro's teaching career at Harvard, Amherst, University of Pennsylvania, and University of Texas.

Content Abstract: Vicente Filisola (1789-1850) was commissioned as Lopez de Santa-Anna's second in command during the campaign against Texas. After the defeat and capture of Santa-Anna at the Battle of San Jacinto, it fell to Filisola to evacuate Mexican forces from Texas despite heavy opposition from other officers, including José Francisco Urrea (1797-1849). Urrea replaced Filisola as general in command after the retreat, and was determined to continue fighting. However, due to Santa-Anna's orders, he was forced to withdraw. Collection contains nine letters and other documents by two Mexican generals concerning the Battle of the Alamo and the immediate aftermath of the Battle of San Jacinto.

Content Abstract: The Women's Overseas Service League (WOSL) was founded in 1921 by women who had served in World War I. The group initially existed as local units, but soon became a national organization and began publishing the quarterly magazine Carry On. An annual convention was also established in 1921 and has been held every year except during the World War II years of 1942-1945. WOSL was the first women's organization to contribute to UNICEF and was one of the first organizations to be an accredited observer at the United Nations. The records of the Women's Overseas Service League document the everyday business and functions of the organization. The records include correspondence, minutes, reports, photographs, scrapbooks and printed materials. Insight into the organization is offered from a national and local perspective. The collection exposes the fundamental operations that were carried out by the members of WOSL.
