Content Abstract: The Citizens' Committee for the Completion of the North Expressway organized in San Antonio in 1971 as a group backing immediate completion of the North Expressway. The committee sought to obtain the signatures of every San Antonio and Bexar County resident favoring resumption of freeway construction after a ten-year delay. This collection is comprised of one scrapbook, compiled by the Citizens' Committee for the Completion of the North Expressway, and two undated photographs. The scrapbook contains newspaper clippings related to the Committee's efforts to see the completion of the North Expressway (North Loop 410) in San Antonio. The clippings document running totals of petition signatures received, the organizations that supported and opposed the construction and the Committee, additional delays in construction, and public opinion.

Content Abstract: Communities Organized for Public Service (COPS) is an organization of 26 parishes in the predominantly Hispanic, low-income West Side and South Side of San Antonio. Founded in 1974, it is the oldest of the Interfaith Area Foundation (IAF) organizations in Texas and, indeed, in the entire national network. The Metro Alliance, which shares office space and many resources with C.O.P.S., formed in 1989 through a merger of the East Side Alliance, composed of African American and Hispanic low- and lower-middle income churches, and the Metropolitan Congregational Alliance. The bulk of the collection consists of news clippings, project files, reports, budgets, programs and general office files.

Content Abstract: Robin Ellis owned Robin Ellis Collectibles in San Antonio, Texas. He served as Historian for the Society for Preservation of Historic Fort Sam Houston. The Collection is comprised of San Antonio ephemera including postcards, maps, photographs, menus, and other items from San Antonio landmarks, institutions, and businesses spanning the years 1868-2012.

Content Abstract: Mary Carolyn Hollers George is a writer and architectural historian. The collection consists of research notes, audio tapes of interviews, notes on the interviews and correspondence about her research. Most of the material dates from 1978 to 1988.

Content Abstract: Henry Patrick Drought was born in 1858 in County Clare, Ireland. He eventually settled in San Antonio, Texas to take the Bar examination and establish a law practice. Drought became the attorney for Francis Smith, Caldwell and Company, the San Antonio branch of an investment firm that acted as a financial liaison between Texas farmers and ranchers seeking money to expand their land and agriculture operations, and British and Scottish financiers who had money to lend and were looking for greater returns on their investments than European markets could. Drought purchased the company with Francis Smith, and after Smith's retirement, the company came to be known as H. P. Drought and Company. Under his guidance, the company became one of the most successful investment firms in San Antonio. Prior to his death, Drought's son, Henry Patrick Drought, Jr., became a partner. The collection consists of mortgage investment records made between the company and local and international investors from 1884 to 1969. These records include financial ledgers, correspondence, abstracts of title, and contracts documenting mortgage and loan transactions. Of note are descriptions of property and the names of investors, landowners, and businesses in San Antonio, Texas.

Content Abstract: John Kellogg Kight was a long time employee and historian of successive transportation companies in San Antonio. The records of VIA Metropolitan Transit, kept by Kight, include material from the beginning of mass transit in San Antonio in 1878 to 1990. The Kight Transportation Collection documents the history of mass transportation in San Antonio. The collection is divided into three series of records representing the different types of material and the origins of that material: VIA Records, Transportation, and Special Formats.

Content Abstract: Mario Marcel Salas was born in San Antonio, Texas on July 30, 1949. Salas became an advocate for San Antonio's African-American community in the early 1970s and was a key member of local activist groups such as the San Antonio chapter of the Student National Coordinating Committee, Organizations United for Eastside Development, Black Coalition on Mass Media, and Frontline 2000. He was elected to the City Council of San Antonio in 1997, where he served two full terms as Representative for District 2. The collections spans the years 1968 through 2016 and consists of materials spanning a wide range of Salas' interests. Items include photographs and publications, information about organizations, people, topics, and events of interest to Salas, such as revolutionary and progressive political movements in the U.S. and abroad, police brutality, and political prisoners.

Content Abstract: San Antonio Fair, Inc., incorporated in December 1962 to formally organize the planning, fundraising and designing of HemisFair '68 (the 1968 World's Fair) in San Antonio, Texas. The records of the San Antonio Fair, Inc., document the planning, lobbying, financing and construction of HemisFair '68. The records consist of correspondence, meeting minutes, committee reports, financial records, newspaper and magazine articles, press releases, photographic materials, blueprints, maps and plats, artwork, oral history interview transcripts, scrapbooks of clippings and ephemera, and audiovisual materials (film and sound recordings). Most of the records predate the opening of the fair.

Content Abstract: Formed in 1937 by the Texas State Legislature, the San Antonio River Authority (SARA) conserves and protects the water supply in the San Antonio River basin in Bexar, Goliad, Karnes, and Wilson counties and manages flood control. The San Antonio River Authority records consist of reports, project materials, correspondence, maps, surveys, minutes and newsletters. Also included are newspaper clippings, photographs and theses.

Content Abstract: William (Bill) and Fay Sinkin, both known for their longstanding commitment to civic issues, married in 1942, made their home in San Antonio, and raised two sons. William is recognized for his involvement in civic, banking and community activities that promote small business. Fay is recognized for her community activism, especially in the areas of public health and water issues. The papers document the Sinkin's longstanding commitment to civic issues and include correspondence, clippings, articles, scrapbooks, photographs, videotapes, and date books. The collection has been organized into four series: William Sinkin, Fay Sinkin, Scrapbooks, Audiovisual materials.

Content Abstract: Stewart Title Company was a company that abstracted land titles. It was founded in the 1890s in Galveston, Texas, by Maco Stewart. The Stewart family incorporated under the name Stewart Title Guaranty Company in 1908 and two years later opened an office in Dallas. In 1911, the Stewarts established an office in San Antonio by leasing and later purchasing Bexar Abstract Company's records. Stewart Title Company went on to expand outside of Texas beginning in 1956. The Stewart Title Company Records are, in part, a compilation of the land records obtained by Stewart Title Company as a result of its acquisition of Bexar Abstract Company in 1911. The records also include the company's own land records which were built upon those acquired from 1911 forward. Additionally, there are some administrative and client records that were maintained by both Stewart Title and its parent companies.

Content Abstract: The San Antonio River Walk Commission was created to review and regulate development along the River Walk (Paseo Del Rio) and La Villita. The San Antonio River Walk Commission-David Straus Papers include meeting minutes for the San Antonio River Walk Commission, information about development projects, and history of the River Walk. An item of note in this collection is the Master plan for the creation of the River Walk and its expansion for HemisFair, the 1968 World's Fair.

Content Abstract: Joe Stubblefield worked as an architect in San Antonio, Texas, from 1972 until his death in 2007. His major architectural projects in the San Antonio area included the San Pedro Springs Park master plan, McAllister Fine Arts Center, St. Paul Square South Block improvements, San Antonio Police Officers Association, Borglum Studio Restoration, El Mirador Garden House, Via-Ellis Alley historic restoration, and Villas Del Norte alternative housing. Projects outside of San Antonio included the Nimitz Museum expansion in Fredericksburg, Texas, and the McFaddin Ward House Museum in Beaumont, Texas. The collection spans the years 1939 through 2007 and includes appointment books, sketchbooks documenting the architect's career, and assorted awards and diplomas.

Content Abstract: Target '90/Goals for San Antonio was a comprehensive community planning organization created to implement strategies for meeting San Antonio's economic, cultural and social goals. This city-wide organization was designed to bring together diverse civic constituencies to carry out the goals developed by the Target '90 Commission and United San Antonio. The records of United San Antonio, 1977-1984, include committee records and correspondence as well as information about various conferences which were sponsored or attended by United San Antonio. Information detailing United San Antonio's work with other groups is also included. The records of Target '90/ Goals for San Antonio date from 1971 to 1992 but the bulk of the material is from 1982-1989.

Content Abstract: The City of Terrell Hills is a residential community between Alamo Heights and Fort Sam Houston. In 1919, Dr. Fredrick Terrell sold the property to a group of San Antonio businessmen, who formed the Terrell Hills Community. This group established basic services in the area such as electricity. Terrell hills was incorporated as a town and elected a mayor in 1939. The City was established in 1957. The collection spans the years 1838 through 1956 and includes correspondence and other information about various projects and activities. Most of the material concerns the founding and early management, in the 1920s and 1930s, of the Community that would later become the City of Terrell Hills.

Content Abstract: The HemisFair ’68 Memorabilia Collection is an artificial collection created by UTSA Special Collections. The majority of the material in the collection was donated by people who attended or worked at the fair. San Antonio hosted the World’s Fair at HemisFair Park in 1968. This collection contains ephemera, photographs, newspaper and magazine articles, audiovisual materials, and souvenir items which document HemisFair '68 and subsequent anniversary celebrations.

Content Abstract: The Institute of Texan Cultures (ITC), a museum and campus of the University of Texas at San Antonio, was established in 1965 by the 59th Texas Legislature. Originally housing the Texas Pavilion at HemisFair '68, it was designed to study the ethnic groups that settled in Texas. The ITC Library was established in 1965 as a repository for books and images of artifacts being collected by researchers preparing exhibits for the Texas Pavilion. This collection spans the years 1965 through 1994 and includes materials relating to HemisFair '68 that were collected by the ITC Library. Materials include photographs, transparencies, printed materials, newspaper clippings, souvenir items, essays, and other materials.

Content Abstract: Willard Eastman Simpson Sr., one of the early pioneers in the emerging field of consulting structural engineering in Texas. The collection includes three photograph albums documenting the W.E. Simpson Company’s projects in building construction and civil-structural engineering around South Texas including San Antonio, Houston, Galveston and the Hill Country from the 1900s-1930s. Also included in the collection are photographs of later projects that date from the mid-1950s to the early 1980s.

Content Abstract: Natalie (Zoe) Wright served on the Board of Directors of the Woman's Pavilion at HemisFair 1968 in San Antonio, Texas, the first world's fair ever to be held in Texas. She was born in 1928 in San Antonio, living in San Antonio and Austin, Texas, for most of her life. She attended the University of Texas at Austin from 1945-1946 as a drama major. She has been active in several civic organizations including the San Antonio Conservation Society, Military-Civilian Club of San Antonio, San Antonio Art League, American Red Cross, and the Salvation Army. This collection is comprised of one scrapbook, compiled by HemisFair 1968 Woman's Pavilion Board of Directors member Zoe Wright. The scrapbook spans the years 1967 through 1968 and includes materials documenting HemisFair 1968, with a particular focus on materials generated by and relating to the Woman's Pavilion.
