Content Abstract: Norfleet Giddings Bone, born in 1892, was a landscape designer and civil engineer, serving in World War II in the United States Army Air Corps. He served as the Supervising Landscape Architect and Landscape Engineer for Randolph Air Force Base (San Antonio, Texas), which was created as a training base for pilots. During this time, he also supervised the landscape design at Barksdale Air Force Base in Shreveport, Louisiana. Bone worked for the Army Corps of Engineers in their San Antonio District Office during World War II. While with the Army Corps of Engineers, Bone was responsible for maintaining the landscaping and grassing of the flying fields at bases around Texas. After World War II, Bone moved back to Austin and worked with the Texas State Parks Board until his retirement in 1963. The collections spans the years 1917 through 1980 and contains correspondence, photographs, reports, specifications, maps, drawings, newsclippings, plant lists, and blueprints that document the life and work of a twentieth century landscape architect and civil engineer.

Content Abstract: Leland Busby was an early San Antonio builder who constructed cottage homes in Alamo Heights, Olmos Park, Monte Vista and the Jefferson High School area. He began building in San Antonio in 1918 and developed Leland Terrace, Oak Park Estates and Oak Park Village at the New Braunfels and Nacogdoches. Records include approximately 125 blueprints, architectural plans, and sketches.

Content Abstract: Born in Hillingdon, Middlesex, England, Alfred Giles took on an apprenticeship with the architectural firm of Giles and Bivens in London for two years before immigrating to the United States and eventually settling in Texas. By 1876, Giles had established his own architectural firm. Giles produced designs for over 90 structures. The collection spans the years 1861-1955 and 1972-1989 and includes correspondence, cards, photographs, artwork by Giles, books, magazines, clippings, legal documents, diaries, and scrapbooks that relate to the Giles family, Hillingdon Ranch (Texas), and Alfred Giles work as an architect.

Content Abstract: Jacinto Quirarte was a professor emeritus and former dean of the College of Fine and Applied Arts at the University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA). As an art historian and author, he concentrated on Pre-Columbian and Chicano art history. The papers span the years 1944 through 2009 and include correspondence, speeches, administrative records, articles, manuscripts for publication, newsletters, posters, and photographs. The bulk of the materials date from the 1970s to the 1990s. The collection documents Quirarte’s career at UTSA as founding dean of the College of Fine and Applied Arts (now the College of Liberal and Fine Arts) and a professor emeritus. Research materials focus on Pre-Columbian and Chicano art, in addition to research on the Spanish Missions in Texas.

His major architectural projects in the San Antonio area included the San Pedro Springs Park master plan, McAllister Fine Arts Center, St. Paul Square South Block improvements, San Antonio Police Officers Association, Borglum Studio Restoration, El Mirador Garden House, Via-Ellis Alley historic restoration, and Villas Del Norte alternative housing. Projects outside of San Antonio included the Nimitz Museum expansion in Fredericksburg, Texas, and the McFaddin Ward House Museum in Beaumont, Texas. The collection spans the years 1939 through 2007 and includes appointment books, sketchbooks documenting the architect's career, and assorted awards and diplomas.

Content Abstract: The Institute of Texan Cultures Oral History Collection originated from a regional meeting of the Texas Historical Commission held in Bandera, TX in 1973 calling for the creation of an oral history program to document the history of San Antonio and Bexar County. The collection consists of 900+ interviews conducted since 1967 and document a broad range of activities related to life in Texas.

Content Abstract: Willard Eastman Simpson Sr., one of the early pioneers in the emerging field of consulting structural engineering in Texas. The collection includes three photograph albums documenting the W.E. Simpson Company’s projects in building construction and civil-structural engineering around South Texas including San Antonio, Houston, Galveston and the Hill Country from the 1900s-1930s. Also included in the collection are photographs of later projects that date from the mid-1950s to the early 1980s.
