The brothers were the sons of Josiah Woodhull, birthplace unknown, and Hannah Jones Woodhull, born on Long Island, New York, and settled in San Antonio. On the ranch, the brothers raised cattle, sheep and goats. The collection spans the years 1875 through 1931 and reflects, chiefly through correspondence, the business dealings of the Woodhull brothers, as well as some aspects of their personal lives. The collection includes advertisements, bills-of-sale, correspondence, contracts, inventories, newspaper clippings, permits, receipts, and other administrative, legal and financial documents.

James Frank Dobie was an American folklorist, writer, and newspaper columnist known for many books depicting the richness and traditions of life in rural Texas during the days of the open range. The Morris Cook Collection of J. Frank Dobie Materials is a collection of materials by or about the Texas writer J. Frank Dobie. The collection incorporates magazines, newspaper clippings, pamphlets, notes and letters from Dobie spanning the years 1916 to 1988.

Content Abstract: Born in Hillingdon, Middlesex, England, Alfred Giles took on an apprenticeship with the architectural firm of Giles and Bivens in London for two years before immigrating to the United States and eventually settling in Texas. By 1876, Giles had established his own architectural firm. Giles produced designs for over 90 structures. The collection spans the years 1861-1955 and 1972-1989 and includes correspondence, cards, photographs, artwork by Giles, books, magazines, clippings, legal documents, diaries, and scrapbooks that relate to the Giles family, Hillingdon Ranch (Texas), and Alfred Giles work as an architect.

Hester was Professor of Anthropology, Division of Social Sciences at the University of Texas at San Antonio from 1973-1987 and created and served as Director of UTSA’s Center for Archaeological Research from 1974-1987. From 1987 until his retirement, Dr. Hester taught at The University of Texas at Austin. The papers include manuscript drafts, correspondence, committee files, grant files, and lectures related to Hester’s career at the University of Texas at San Antonio.

Content Abstract: Reflections on Texas was developed and produced by KMOL-TV San Antonio to commemorate the United States Bicentennial. The series of 250 30-second vignettes was initially intended to provide an overview of local history to heighten community awareness of the past, but evolved into focusing more on the offbeat moments of Texas and San Antonio history. This collection consists of 186 2-inch quadruplex videotapes.

Content Abstract: Harold O. Lee enlisted in the armed forces after the bombing of Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941. He trained at Scott Field, Illinois, and later went to Europe and Africa to fight in World War II. Collection contains correspondence to and from Harold Lee, his parents, friends, and the War Department, as well as an autobiographical reminiscence, and a few photographs and newspaper clippings. The letters date from 1930 to 1990. The majority of the correspondence ranges from 1942 to 1945, consisting of Harold's letters to his parents chronicling his adventures and misadventures.

Content Abstract: James Morgan (1787-1866) was a Texas pioneer, merchant, land speculator and Commander at Galveston during the Texas Revolution (1835-1836). He first came to Texas in 1830. In 1834, during the feverish era of speculation just prior to the Texas Revolution, Morgan organized an ambitious land venture called the New Washington Association. The collection is comprised of twenty-eight documents and letters. All but two of the documents were written before 1841. Most of the documents are related to Morgan and the establishment of the New Washington Association. Many of the documents bear Morgan’s own notes and docketing; some of them are his drafts or retaining copies.

Content Abstract: John Robert Peace, Jr. (1917-1974) was a Texas lawyer and public official. He served on the University of Texas Board of Regents from 1967-1973 (Chair, 1971-1973). He is credited with being a driving force in the establishment of the University of Texas at San Antonio. Peace also was an avid collector of Texana, and he amassed a collection of about 900 books and 500 manuscripts, some dating back to the 1700s. The collection is comprised of materials collected by John R. Peace, Jr. Materials document Texas history. Historical manuscripts comprise more than 350 documents--both original manuscripts and printed material--related to Texas history, concentrating on the periods before 1860. The documents consist of historical manuscripts, copies and transcriptions of original documents, dated 1825-1840. Other documents, mostly undated but circa 1954, consist of letters, newspaper articles, transcriptions, drafts and notes.

Content Abstract: The Society of Mayflower Descendants in the State of Texas, a state chapter of the General Society of Mayflower Descendants, was founded in San Antonio, Texas on December 24, 1931. The goals of the Society are to join together people who share a common ancestry and to educate the public about the role of the Pilgrims and the Mayflower Compact in the early history and development of the United States. The Texas chapter began when fourteen members convened the first meeting in San Antonio in December 1931. The collection spans the years 1931 through 2021 and documents the activities of the state chapter and the duties performed by the Society's officers. Records include correspondence, legal documents, articles of incorporation, constitution and bylaws, membership ledgers and index cards, photographs, newsletters published by the Connecticut Society and some material connected with the General Society of Mayflower Descendants. There is also a wooden chest used by the Texas Society to display its charter, the names of the charter members and other historical items.

Content Abstract: The Institute of Texan Cultures (ITC), a museum and campus of the University of Texas at San Antonio, was established in 1965 by the 59th Texas Legislature. Originally housing the Texas Pavilion at HemisFair '68, it was designed to study the ethnic groups that settled in Texas. The ITC Library was established in 1965 as a repository for books and images of artifacts being collected by researchers preparing exhibits for the Texas Pavilion. The vertical files were started in 1967 by the original Institute of Texan Cultures research staff, and was used for planning the exhibits for the Texas Pavilion at HemisFair. Staff members and student helpers toured the state making copies of items in libraries and private collections. After the fair, the research staff -- and later library staff-- continued to add to these files for exhibit updates and for use in publications, audiovisuals, and other ITC products. The general file was started for items that didn’t fit into the ethnic category.

Content Abstract: Vicente Filisola (1789-1850) was commissioned as Lopez de Santa-Anna's second in command during the campaign against Texas. After the defeat and capture of Santa-Anna at the Battle of San Jacinto, it fell to Filisola to evacuate Mexican forces from Texas despite heavy opposition from other officers, including José Francisco Urrea (1797-1849). Urrea replaced Filisola as general in command after the retreat, and was determined to continue fighting. However, due to Santa-Anna's orders, he was forced to withdraw. Collection contains nine letters and other documents by two Mexican generals concerning the Battle of the Alamo and the immediate aftermath of the Battle of San Jacinto.

Content Abstract: Sebron Sneed Wilcox founded the Laredo Historical Society (Laredo, Tex.) and was a member of the Texas Historical Commission for Webb County, Texas. Wilcox was a Texas historian, writing several articles based on materials in the Laredo Archives. He worked as a court reporter for the Forth-ninth District in Laredo from 1911-1958. The Sebron Sneed Wilcox papers span the years 1749 through 1968 and consist of his collected and written documents regarding the history of Laredo, Texas. The papers consist of correspondence, Laredo history, lawsuit and trial transcriptions, speeches and documentation on the various celebrations held in Laredo.
