The Gene Elder papers document Elder's work as an artist, writer, and activist through journals, original works of art, exhibit materials, articles written by Elder, and correspondence. Personal papers and photographs augment Elder's professional materials. Other records document Elder's professional ventures at Blue Star Art Complex and as Archivist at the Happy Foundation Archives.

Content Abstract: Fred R. Garza is a Chicano activist who lives in San Antonio, Texas. He has been active in organizations such as La Raza Unida Party, the Texas Farm Workers Union, and Teatro de los Barrios. The collection consists of cultural and political posters from the Chicano movement.

Content Abstract: Leo Garza was a political cartoonist who drew for the San Antonio Express News from 1987 to 2007. His daily strip cartoons touched on a variety of national and local topics, from national and state elections, to San Antonio social and cultural events. Characters Nacho Gurache and his sidekick Fulano entertained readers with their comical misadventures and often frank commentary on San Antonio life. The collection is comprised of original pen and ink and mixed media comic panels and strips, composed on matte paper and art board.

Content Abstract: Xavier Garza is an author, artist, and storyteller whose work focuses primarily on his experiences growing up in the small border town of Rio Grande City. The papers consist of typescript manuscripts, pencil and ink sketches, acrylic paintings and newspaper and magazine articles related to his work.

Content Abstract: Born in Hillingdon, Middlesex, England, Alfred Giles took on an apprenticeship with the architectural firm of Giles and Bivens in London for two years before immigrating to the United States and eventually settling in Texas. By 1876, Giles had established his own architectural firm. Giles produced designs for over 90 structures. The collection spans the years 1861-1955 and 1972-1989 and includes correspondence, cards, photographs, artwork by Giles, books, magazines, clippings, legal documents, diaries, and scrapbooks that relate to the Giles family, Hillingdon Ranch (Texas), and Alfred Giles work as an architect.

Content Abstract: Naomi Shihab Nye has published several books of poetry, writings for children, novels and columns. Nye has also worked as a visiting writer in schools at all grade levels and universities and has won several national awards. The collection includes the typescripts, manuscripts, drafts, proofs, and other pre-publication forms of the writings of poet and writer Naomi Shihab Nye. Writings include early and revised drafts of poems, essays, and other writings. Published work is supplemented by hundreds of unpublished poems. These working papers are accompanied by notebooks dating back to Nye's school years, an extensive correspondence file with authors, editors, publishers, family members and fans, copies of her publications in book form, and her contributions to books and journals. Also present is extensive material about Nye, including audiovisual materials, work relating to her teaching in public schools, and photographs.

Content Abstract: Jacinto Quirarte was a professor emeritus and former dean of the College of Fine and Applied Arts at the University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA). As an art historian and author, he concentrated on Pre-Columbian and Chicano art history. The papers span the years 1944 through 2009 and include correspondence, speeches, administrative records, articles, manuscripts for publication, newsletters, posters, and photographs. The bulk of the materials date from the 1970s to the 1990s. The collection documents Quirarte’s career at UTSA as founding dean of the College of Fine and Applied Arts (now the College of Liberal and Fine Arts) and a professor emeritus. Research materials focus on Pre-Columbian and Chicano art, in addition to research on the Spanish Missions in Texas.

Content Abstract: Willie Young Richardson was a San Antonio public school educator for 32 years, as well as a well-known artist, poet, and novelist. Richardson was the first African American artist to become a member of the River Art Group in San Antonio. Content Abstract: This Austin-based, non-profit organization provides one to two weeks of free housing, serigraphy instruction, and use of serigraphy equipment for ten to fifteen artists per year. It was founded by printmaker Sam Coronado in 1993, and takes place at Coronado Studio in Austin, Texas. The collection consists of 251 serigraphy prints made by over 200 artists during their participation in the Serie Print Project between 1993 and 2010.

Content Abstract: John Shown was an artist known for his collages and stitchery wall hangings. Shown created Forum magazine, an Artists Forum of Texas publication and Nuevo en todas las artes, the first freely distributed magazine of art and entertainment in Mexico. The collection documents Shown's work as an artist while living in San Antonio through journals, inventories, photographs, and slides depicting Shown's artwork. Also in the collection are issues ofForum magazine of as well as photographs and print materials related to the publication. The collection holds two issues of Nuevo en todas las artes, a Cornyation manuscript, other written work, and correspondence from Shown's time spent in Mexico.

The fine art pieces have been acquired through both gifts and purchases, and include mostly contemporary paintings, sculptures, works on paper, and mixed media by South Texas artists, some of whom are alumni of UTSA. The records span the years 1982 to 2019 and include planning, research, inventory, and other administrative files related to management of the UTSA Art Collection. The records also contain postcards, photographs, and posters related to events and artists represented in the collection.

Content Abstract: The Department of Art and Art History dates back to the earliest years of the University of Texas at San Antonio. The studio art curriculum was designed to prepare students for either professional careers in studio art or for teaching. The main fields of concentration have included painting, drawing, sculpture, photography, printmaking, and ceramics. Records consist of 100 fine art prints in five suites. These prints were either collected or produced by members of the Art Department, and were created using a variety of printmaking techniques, including lithography, intaglio, etching, and serigraphy.

Content Abstract: The Institute of Texan Cultures Oral History Collection originated from a regional meeting of the Texas Historical Commission held in Bandera, TX in 1973 calling for the creation of an oral history program to document the history of San Antonio and Bexar County. The collection consists of 900+ interviews conducted since 1967 and document a broad range of activities related to life in Texas.

Content Abstract: The Texas Folklife Festival was first held in 1972 as an extension of the educational programs of the Institute of Texan Cultures museum. A major thrust of the Festival was to preserve and display the ethnic traditions and pioneer skills that had helped to form the state. The Festival features entertainment, skill demonstrations, local and ethnic food and beverages, music, and other programs. The collection spans the years 1970 through 2008 and contains correspondence, memoranda, newsletters, press releases, financial records, photographs, posters, and other materials documenting the Texas Folklife Festival.

Content Abstract: Beck Whitehead is a San Antonio artist who served as Chair of Papermaking and Book Arts at the Southwest School of Art until 2016. Whitehead is a papermaker who creates paper paintings and one-of-a-kind books. The collection documents three of Whitehead’s book and paper arts projects undertaken between 2001-2018. It includes prototypes, mock ups, and test printing used by Whitehead in the creative process.

Content Abstract: Robert Willson was an internationally known artist who was educated in the Southwest United States and Mexico. In his early twenties he studied in Mexico and was among the first American artists to adapt Mayan and Mexican folk art imagery in his art. Willson's later work merged Ancient Mayan imagery with Italian glass sculpture techniques. The collection consists of photographs from Robert Willson's two educational trips to Mexico, with a focus on the local people and culture. Also included are signed photographs of artists he befriended, and promotional flyers for Socialism in Mexico.
