Content Abstract: The African American Quilt Circle of San Antonio was founded in August 2017 by four quilters. The organization creates and exhibits quilts that illustrate San Antonio’s African American history and community. The collection contains a small scrapbook and materials relating to quilt exhibitions.

Air Force Women Officers Associated

Content Abstract: The Air Force Women Officers Associated was founded in 1975 by Norma Breedlove and other retired Air Force women officers as a way to preserve the friendships and camaraderie they enjoyed while on active duty. It has grown considerably since then, and now offers membership to active duty, reserve, and separated women officers of the Air Force as well as retired officers. While the Air Force Women Officers Associated still fosters comradeship and friendships, the organization decided in 2000 to become more issue-orientated. The AFWOA focuses on interest issues concerning military women, such as promotional opportunities and education. The records of the Air Force Women Officers Associated document the organization's business, functions, and reunion planning. The collection consists of correspondence, administrative records, manuals, printed materials, photographs, and scrapbooks.

Content Abstract: Gertrude Batiste is recognized for her contributions to the San Antonio Area Council of Girl Scouts and her volunteer work with several San Antonio organizations. She has served as president of the United Methodist Women at Windcrest United Methodist Church in San Antonio, and has been active in the San Antonio Alumnae Chapter of the Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, San Antonio Women's Celebration and Hall of Fame, and The Great Ladies of San Antonio. She was also a founding member of the San Antonio Chapter of the National Coalition of 100 Black Women. The papers consist of awards, correspondence, newsclippings, a limited number of photographs, and notes and materials gathered by Batiste as an active member of several organizations. The bulk of the materials documents Batiste's community involvement during the 1980s and 1990s. The papers are arranged into two series, Community Involvement and Personal Papers.

The Bexar County Women's Political Caucus was formed in 1971, shortly after the forming of the National Women's Political Caucus and the Texas Women's Political Caucus, and is affiliated with both groups. Content Abstract: The Brown and Lane family included Isaac Newton Brown, Jeanie Valliant Autry Brown, Henry Denison Brown, Jeanie Valliant Brahan Brown, Martha Brown Storm, Elise Denison Brown Lane, Barton George Lane, Sr., Elise Lila Lane Grohe, Henry Lane, Dorothy Florence Lane Brennan, and Barton George Lane, Jr. These individuals represent four generations of the Brown and Lane family and their correspondence constitutes the bulk of the collection. The collection spans the years 1803 through 2002 and includes correspondence between several generations of the family. Also included in the papers are Chi Omega sorority materials from Elise Denison Brown Lane, financial records, genealogy notebooks charts, and certificates, diplomas, and assorted materials.

Content Abstract: The North Alamo City Business and Professional Women's Club (BPW) was established in 1968, an official chartered club of the Texas Federation of Business and Professional Women and National Federation of Business and Professional Women. Among the club's achievements was the establishment of their Career Awareness Program, the first inaugurated by a state club. Additionally, the club presented annual scholarships and hosted annual educational seminars for women. The collection spans the years 1953 through 1992 (with the bulk of materials dating 1968-1992) and documents the establishment, functions, and district-wide, statewide, national, and international involvement of the North Alamo City Business and Professional Women's Club. The bulk of the collection is comprised of materials generated by the Texas and National Federations of Business and Professional Women, including newsletters, conference materials, and general procedural guides and manuals.

Content Abstract: The Business & Professional Women's Club of San Antonio was organized on May 23, 1923 to offer professional women an opportunity to gather to promote their interests. The club's main interests have been providing women with business opportunities, promoting opportunities for women in the professions and encouraging young women to enter the professions. Records consist of minutes, reports, bulletins, membership applications, yearbooks, correspondence, financial records, legal documents, scrapbooks, programs and photographic materials that document the structure, activities, interests, events and business transactions of the Club. The best overview of Club activities on a daily basis can be found in the History Books and Bulletins. However, significant gaps in documentation exist for the 1940s and 1950s.

Charity Ball Association of San Antonio

Content Abstract: The Charity Ball Association of San Antonio is a nonprofit organization, founded in 1954 to raise money by means of an annual ball to benefit not-for-profit children's organizations in Bexar County, Texas. Revenue for the chosen children's charities is derived from four sources: dues of the sponsors, profits from the Ball, sales from raffles of prizes that have been donated to the Ball and profits from Rotogravures. The collection includes organizational histories, invitations, Rotogravures, menu/programs and photographs documenting the Charity Ball Association of San Antonio from its beginning in 1954. The bulk of the materials document the Association's annual Chrysanthemum Ball.

Content Abstract: Church Women United in Texas is an ecumenical community of Christian women in Texas who accept the purpose of the movement as stated in its bylaws. Originally formed in 1934, today CWU in Texas is composed of individual members and local units throughout the state. It is also affiliated with the national organization of Church Women United. Reports, minutes, financial records, correspondence, printed materials, photographs, and scrapbook material document the organization, structure, and activities of Church Women United in Texas. The bulk of the collection documents executive board meetings, leadership council meetings, and the annual state meetings, from 1960-1999. However, also included in the collection are financial records, documentation of the state organization's work with local units, and scrapbook materials extending the knowledge and understanding of the state unit's history.

Content Abstract: The Western Hills unit of Church Women United in Texas, an ecumenical community of Christian women, was organized in 1990 in the Texas hill country, northwest of Austin, Texas. The collection spans the years 1990 through 2000 and includes reports, minutes, proceedings, printed material, and other printed and scrapbook material of the Western Hills Unit. Materials document the organization, structure, and activities of the unit, dating from its establishment in 1990 until its disbandment in 2000. The unit's participation in CWU's state and national projects is described in these materials, but the bulk of the material covers local activities.

Citizens' Committee for the Completion of the North Expressway

Content Abstract: The Citizens' Committee for the Completion of the North Expressway organized in San Antonio in 1971 as a group backing immediate completion of the North Expressway. The committee sought to obtain the signatures of every San Antonio and Bexar County resident favoring resumption of freeway construction after a ten-year delay. This collection is comprised of one scrapbook, compiled by the Citizens' Committee for the Completion of the North Expressway, and two undated photographs. The scrapbook contains newspaper clippings related to the Committee's efforts to see the completion of the North Expressway (North Loop 410) in San Antonio. The clippings document running totals of petition signatures received, the organizations that supported and opposed the construction and the Committee, additional delays in construction, and public opinion.

Content Abstract: Communities Organized for Public Service (COPS) is an organization of 26 parishes in the predominantly Hispanic, low-income West Side and South Side of San Antonio. Founded in 1974, it is the oldest of the Interfaith Area Foundation (IAF) organizations in Texas and, indeed, in the entire national network. The Metro Alliance, which shares office space and many resources with C.O.P.S., formed in 1989 through a merger of the East Side Alliance, composed of African American and Hispanic low- and lower-middle income churches, and the Metropolitan Congregational Alliance. The bulk of the collection consists of news clippings, project files, reports, budgets, programs and general office files.

Content Abstract: Dr. Harold Vagtborg, President of Southwest Foundation for Research and Education, created the Council of Research and Academic Libraries of San Antonio (CORAL Union) in the hope of forming a community of libraries that would share information and research materials to help the scholarly public. CORAL Union was founded on 13 December 1966; and at that time, the consortium included: Incarnate Word College, Our Lady of the Lake University, St. Mary’s University, San Antonio College, San Antonio Library, Southwest Research Institute, Southwest Foundation for Research and Education, Trinity University, and the University of Texas Medical School at San Antonio. These charter members carried out the mission of CORAL—to share sources—by creating the first union list of sources.The CORAL Union Records consist of administrative records, financial records, memorandums, correspondence, newsletters, and grant documents. The collection dates span from 1966 to 2005. There are five series, which are: Administrative Documents, Financial Documents, Grants, Special Interest Groups, and Publications.

The chapter follows the philosophy upon which the national organization was founded, committed to engaging in public service, concern for social welfare, academic excellence and cultural enrichment. Content Abstract: Mrs. Bella Glasberg was an active member of several Jewish women’s organizations in San Antonio. The height of her activity occurred from the 1930’s to the 1960’s. She was elected president of the San Antonio Section, National Council of Jewish Women for the 1943-1944 term. Glasberg also served as president and was a long-term member of The San Antonio Chapter of Hadassah. The Bella Glasberg Papers document her involvement in San Antonio Jewish women’s organizations from 1936-1970, and consist of administrative records, printed materials, ephemera and a scrapbook.

Content Abstract: From 1961 to 1989, Lu Elsie Jones was actively involved in several women's organizations in San Antonio, including the Women of the Church of Alamo Heights Presbyterian Church, the San Antonio Musical Club, the Woman’s Breakfast Club, the American Association of University Women--San Antonio Branch (including its Morning Interior Decorating Group), the Selini Study Group, and the San Antonio Council of Delphian Chapters. The collection spans the years 1937 through 1989 (with the bulk from 1981-1988) and documents the roles Lu Elsie Jones had in the organizations to which she belonged. Yearbooks from various women's organizations comprise the bulk of the collection. Other material includes rosters, a commitment book, invitations, and a scrapbook.

The membership seeks to improve the quality of life for the greater community and its members through education, civic, and cultural activities. The San Antonio Chapter was the fifth Links chapter established in Texas, and is one of nearly 250 chapters nationwide. Mitchell Lake Wetlands Society (San Antonio, Tex.)

Content Abstract: As the site of one of San Antonio's first centralized wastewater treatment projects, Mitchell Lake spent most of the 20th century as a sewage collection site. The lake is positioned on a natural migratory bird route and serves as a resting point for tens of thousands of birds each year. When discharge of raw or partially treated effluent was discontinued in 1987, Mitchell Lake was recognized as a world-class bird-watching site. Bird watchers come from all over the world to see the unique variety of birds that visit there. Mitchell Lake Wetlands Society was a support group that assisted San Antonio Water System in protecting and developing the wildlife sanctuary. The bulk of the collection consists of administrative records, including correspondence, minutes, reports and financial records. Also included are typescript drafts, research materials and photographs.

Content Abstract: Chartered in 1996, the San Antonio Chapter of National Coalition of Black Women, Inc., strives to positively influence the lives of young African American females in San Antonio and to empower African American women in general, to reach their highest potential. The San Antonio chapter participates in community programs related to their mission. Its members also mentor in local elementary and middle schools to help young girls plan and eventually meet their career goals. Coalition members also hold Children's Community Health Fairs twice a year to promote a proactive approach to good health within the African American community. The chapter's signature event is the Candace Awards Gala to recognize achievements of African American women, and of men who have demonstrated unique support of African American women. Both are patriotic organizations dedicated to honoring the memory of General Bernardo de Galvez and other Spaniards who aided American Colonies during the War for Independence. Records include founding records, minutes, meetings, treasurer's reports, annual membership rosters, and correspondence concerning donations and events. Pals Social Club (San Antonio, Tex.)

Content Abstract: The Pals Social Club was conceived in 1925 as a way to mentor young African American women. Each year they hold a Debutante Presentation Ball to introduce that year's selected coterie. The African American women selected for the debutante coterie are college students and leaders who represent the club's moral and ethical standards. The bulk of the collection consists of newspaper clippings and photographs. Also included are 80th and 90th anniversary books.

Content Abstract: The Pan American Round Table (PART) was established October 16, 1916, in San Antonio, Texas. It is an independent, nonsectarian, nonpolitical, noncommercial and nonfederated women's organization. The purpose of the Pan American Round Tables is to acquaint members with the language, geography, history, literature, arts, culture, and customs of the republics of the Western Hemisphere, with the objective to foster mutual understanding, knowledge, and friendship among the peoples of the Western Hemisphere. The organizational records of The Pan American Round Table of San Antonio consist primarily of correspondence, minutes, reports, yearbooks, scrapbooks, programs and photographic materials that document the activities, interests, and events of the group. Most strongly documented are the initial years of the movement, when Florence Terry Griswold was Director, 1916-1941. Of note, the records include an extensive and rich collection of printed material, primarily bulletins, booklets, and Pan American Union publications, related to Panamericanism, Mexico, and Latin America prior to 1950.

Content Abstract: The Beta Upsilon Chapter of the Phi Sigma Society, a national honorary science fraternity, was established at the University of Texas at San Antonio in October 1974. The chapter was the first registered student organization at the University of Texas at San Antonio and included 36 faculty members and students. The collection comprises a spiral-bound booklet prepared by the Beta Upsilon Chapter of the Phi Sigma Society. The materials in the booklet document the establishment, development, and activities of the student chapter from 1974 through 1975. Materials include correspondence and memoranda, a written history, an application to the society, a petition for the establishment of the chapter, by-laws, a registration form for student organizations at UTSA, a list of officers, photographs of the initiation and installation ceremony, a press release and news coverage of the establishment of the chapter, and flyers advertising the chapter's events.

San Antonio 100

Content Abstract: San Antonio 100 (SA100) is an organization established in 1984 by seven San Antonio women who participated in the 1983 pilot program of Leadership Texas, a forum designed to prepare women for the reponsibilties of leadership at all levels of public service. The purpose of SA100 is to establish and maintain a membership of at least 100 professional, social, and community women leaders dedicated to making a positive impact upon San Antonio. The records consist of correspondence, memos, minutes, reports, printed material, financial material, newspaper clippings, photographs, and ephemera documenting the foundation, daily function, and monthly meetings of this San Antonio women's organization.

San Antonio and Casino Clubs

Content Abstract: The Casino Association, San Antonio's first social club, was formed in 1854 and incorporated in 1857. It was formed to promote cultural and literary activities in the city. Membership was initially limited to ethnic German men but commissioned U.S. military officers in San Antonio had a standing invitation to be guests at the club. Over time, the membership of the club broadened but the Casino Association was where the elite of San Antonio's German community gathered. Much of the club's early business and conversation was conducted in German. In 1925, the Casino Association was consolidated with the San Antonio Club, a literary society formed in 1882. Together the clubs formed the San Antonio and Casino Clubs, also known as the San Antonio-Casino Club. The San Antonio-Casino Club was dissolved around 1950. The collection contains correspondence, articles of incorporation, account books, mortgage notes, financial and legal records, and guest lists, which document the activities of the members and officers of the San Antonio and Casino Clubs. The correspondence and the activities of long time Club President Conrad A. Goeth (also a San Antonio attorney and Judge) are well documented here.

The records of San Antonio Area Council of Girl Scouts document the organization through correspondence, minutes, reports, photographs, scrapbooks and printed materials, including several issues of the group's magazine, Scout About. The materials present a glimpse of general business activities carried out by board and committee members. In this respect, the records show major changes that occurred within the organization over time. San Antonio Hispanic Chamber of Commerce

Content Abstract: The San Antonio Hispanic Chamber of Commerce is the oldest organization of its type in the United States, having been originally chartered by five local businessmen from Bexar County as the Mexican Chamber of Commerce on May 31, 1929. Its purpose was to encourage and promote trade and cultural relations between San Antonio and Mexico, to disseminate data and information relevant to the San Antonio business community, and to provide technical assistance to the business community in the form of seminars, workshops, and trade shows. In 1987 the Mexican Chamber was renamed the San Antonio Hispanic Chamber of Commerce. In the early 1990's the Hispanic Chamber was recognized as a critical component in negotiating the many compromises which made NAFTA possible. In recent years the chamber's role has broadened to include advocacy on behalf of small, minority- and woman-owned businesses. The San Antonio Hispanic Chamber of Commerce Records include materials that reflect the history, work and policies of the Chamber between 1931 and 2008. Content Abstract: The San Antonio Mother's Service Organization was formed in 1945 to curb juvenile delinquency and positively affect youth through cooperation between the home and the community. The organization was the first African American group of Christian women to get a state charter for a local club. Activities of the group included four annual events: Fellowship Dinner, Pink Tea, Annual Sit-In, and a musical. The organization has contributed to and supported several charities. The collection spans the years 1945 through 1998 and includes legal documents, correspondence, event programs, membership rosters, minutes, newsclippings, newsletters, and a scrapbook. San Antonio Rifle Association

Content Abstract: Founded in 1857 as a rifle club, the San Antonio Schuetzen Verein (directly translated as San Antonio Shooting Club), held target shooting matches in the rural communities around the San Antonio area. The collection comprises 9 ledgers, dating 1891 to 1917, detailing the results of the shooting matches held in towns in the San Antonio area, as well as information regarding dues paid by the different communities' gun clubs.

Content Abstract: The San Antonio Women's Celebration and Hall of Fame was established in 1984 by the Texas Governor's Commission for Women and is now known simply as the San Antonio Women's Hall of Fame. In addition to honoring outstanding women each year, the organization awards scholarships to high school and college students. The San Antonio Women's Celebration and Hall of Fame Records consist of administrative records, clippings, photographs, scrapbooks, printed materials, and a time capsule. The collection documents the everyday business of the organization from its inception in 1984 to 2020.

San Antonio Women's Chamber of Commerce

Content Abstract: The San Antonio Women's Chamber of Commerce (SAWCC) is an affiliate of the Women's Chamber of Commerce of Texas (WCCT), the first state statewide women's chamber of commerce in the United States. Like the WCCT the SAWCC is a non-profit organization whose mission is to promote growth and economic development of women and to achieve the integration of women into leadership roles within the social, political, and economic structures of the public and private spheres of society. The collection consists of board records, and documents related to projects, programs, and issues of concern. There is also a small section devoted to peripheral information about the larger state organization. The largest portion of the records in this collection are devoted to the organization's various programs and issues of concern such as providing women access to leadership roles within the social and political communities of San Antonio. Ephemera and videocassettes are also included in the collection.

Society of Mayflower Descendants in the State of Texas

Content Abstract: The Society of Mayflower Descendants in the State of Texas, a state chapter of the General Society of Mayflower Descendants, was founded in San Antonio, Texas on December 24, 1931. The goals of the Society are to join together people who share a common ancestry and to educate the public about the role of the Pilgrims and the Mayflower Compact in the early history and development of the United States. The Texas chapter began when fourteen members convened the first meeting in San Antonio in December 1931. The collection spans the years 1931 through 2021 and documents the activities of the state chapter and the duties performed by the Society's officers. Records include correspondence, legal documents, articles of incorporation, constitution and bylaws, membership ledgers and index cards, photographs, newsletters published by the Connecticut Society and some material connected with the General Society of Mayflower Descendants. There is also a wooden chest used by the Texas Society to display its charter, the names of the charter members and other historical items.

Sorosis Club

Content Abstract: The Sorosis Club was one of the earliest clubs in San Antonio, Texas, organized exclusively for women in 1903. Originally called the Government Hill Literary Society, the group changed its name to Sorosis Club in 1913 when women from other parts of the city began joining the group. The final Sorosis Club meeting was held in May 2000 at the end of their 1999-2000 club year. The collection spans the years 1923 through 1991 and provides information about the club's members and activities primarily through minutes, photographs, scrapbooks and yearbooks.

Content Abstract: Texas Partners of the Americas is incorporated in the State of Texas as a non-profit organization: the first and largest state affiliate of Partners of the Americas, a private organization that develops leadership, understanding and opportunity in Latin American and the Caribbean through a network of volunteers. Texas Partners of the Americas' activities in Latin America includes sponsoring projects in health and education; providing training and study in emergency preparedness for counterpart organizations from Latin America; distributing books and textbooks to Mexican universities; and making surplus U.S. and state government property available to its Latin American partners. The Texas Partners of the Americas records span the years 1978-1993, but predominately cover 1987-1989. These years represent the tenure of Dr. Joe Neal as Vice-Chair of TPA for Mexico Partnerships in 1988-1990, as well as his work with TPA's El Camino Real Economic Seminar (1988-1989), Higher Education Committee (1987), Nominating Committee, and other activities of Texas Partners. Content Abstract: The Texas Women's Alliance (TWA) is a nonprofit women's organization that researches issues, makes policy recommendations, and works to influence government, with a focus on Texas affairs. Formed in 1984, the founders of the TWA believed there was a need for an organization to represent conservative and business-oriented women. The TWA attempts to recruit women who are professional, business and civic leaders; its activities include conducting seminars and conferences on issues, publishing position papers, and testifying before Texas Senate and House committees. This collection spans the years 1984 through 1995 and includes meeting minutes, reports, position papers, correspondence and other papers, document the history, activities, programs and policy positions of the Texas Women's Alliance (TWA), in its first 11 years. The collection reflects TWA's position on the state budget, economic growth, international trade, U.S.-Mexico relations, tax reform, judicial selection (merit election of judges), public school reform, higher education funding, and pay equity.

Velásquez, William C.

Content Abstract: Willie (William) C. Velásquez was a Chicano movement organizer and the founder of the Southwest Voter Registration Education Project as well as a co-founder as the political party Mexican American Youth Organization and the Mexican American Unity Council. He is nationally recognized for his work including receiving The Presidential Medal of Freedom, the highest national honor any civilian can receive, and was only the second Latino to earn that honor. A scrapbook comprised of news clippings as well as a number of folders of news clippings, condolence cards, invitations, materials pertaining to the acceptance of the Medal of Freedom, and a few photographs.

It is the oldest women's civic and social organization in San Antonio, and was the first women's club in Texas to endorse women's suffrage. Records document the structure, activities, interests, events, and business transactions of the Woman's Club of San Antonio. Of note are membership applications, 1937-1982; Fiesta programs, 1945-1994; and yearbooks, 1900-2016. The core of the Club's activities are documented in the records of the Roundtables.

Content Abstract: The Young Men's Christian Association (YMCA) of San Antonio was created in the spring of 1886 with approximately 100 members. The YMCA of San Antonio was dedicated to putting Judeo-Christian principles into practice while building healthy minds and bodies. Activities included various exercise programs, educational programs and sports leagues, most of which were geared to serve the needs of boys and young men. The bulk of the collection is administrative records, such as the minutes of the Board of Directors, that illustrate the day to day operation of the YMCA of San Antonio. Material concerning the programs at some branches is also included.
