African American Quilt Circle of San Antonio

Content Abstract: The African American Quilt Circle of San Antonio was founded in August 2017 by four quilters. The organization creates and exhibits quilts that illustrate San Antonio’s African American history and community. The collection contains a small scrapbook and materials relating to quilt exhibitions.

Air Force Women Officers Associated

Content Abstract: The Air Force Women Officers Associated was founded in 1975 by Norma Breedlove and other retired Air Force women officers as a way to preserve the friendships and camaraderie they enjoyed while on active duty. It has grown considerably since then, and now offers membership to active duty, reserve, and separated women officers of the Air Force as well as retired officers. While the Air Force Women Officers Associated still fosters comradeship and friendships, the organization decided in 2000 to become more issue-orientated. The AFWOA focuses on interest issues concerning military women, such as promotional opportunities and education. The records of the Air Force Women Officers Associated document the organization's business, functions, and reunion planning. The San Antonio Branch was established on January 9, 1909 as a branch of the Southern Association of College Women. The San Antonio Branch of the American Association of University Women Records, 1954-2004, contain correspondence, articles of incorporation, bylaws, ledgers, legal documents, agendas, minutes, membership lists, directories, tax returns, financial statements, oral histories, awards, newsletters, invitations, programs, scrapbooks, videocassettes, creative works, and other printed materials, arranged in seven series. Content Abstract: The Bexar County Women's Political Caucus is a multi-partisan organization committed to electing greater numbers of women to public office. The organization endorses candidates and publicly addresses issues relevant to women in Bexar County and San Antonio. The Bexar County Women's Political Caucus was formed in 1971, shortly after the forming of the National Women's Political Caucus and the Texas Women's Political Caucus, and is affiliated with both groups. They host conferences, organize political workshops, and hold fundraising events for candidates and for themselves. The collection spans the years 1974 through 2002 and reflects the organization's work to educate local voters about women's issues and the candidacy of politicians who share their ideals. Content Abstract: The North Alamo City Business and Professional Women's Club (BPW) was established in 1968, an official chartered club of the Texas Federation of Business and Professional Women and National Federation of Business and Professional Women. Among the club's achievements was the establishment of their Career Awareness Program, the first inaugurated by a state club. Additionally, the club presented annual scholarships and hosted annual educational seminars for women. The collection spans the years 1953 through 1992 (with the bulk of materials dating 1968-1992) and documents the establishment, functions, and district-wide, statewide, national, and international involvement of the North Alamo City Business and Professional Women's Club. The bulk of the collection is comprised of materials generated by the Texas and National Federations of Business and Professional Women, including newsletters, conference materials, and general procedural guides and manuals.

Content Abstract: The Business & Professional Women's Club of San Antonio was organized on May 23, 1923 to offer professional women an opportunity to gather to promote their interests. The club's main interests have been providing women with business opportunities, promoting opportunities for women in the professions and encouraging young women to enter the professions. Records consist of minutes, reports, bulletins, membership applications, yearbooks, correspondence, financial records, legal documents, scrapbooks, programs and photographic materials that document the structure, activities, interests, events and business transactions of the Club. The best overview of Club activities on a daily basis can be found in the History Books and Bulletins. However, significant gaps in documentation exist for the 1940s and 1950s.

Charity Ball Association of San Antonio

Content Abstract: The Charity Ball Association of San Antonio is a nonprofit organization, founded in 1954 to raise money by means of an annual ball to benefit not-for-profit children's organizations in Bexar County, Texas. Revenue for the chosen children's charities is derived from four sources: dues of the sponsors, profits from the Ball, sales from raffles of prizes that have been donated to the Ball and profits from Rotogravures. The collection includes organizational histories, invitations, Rotogravures, menu/programs and photographs documenting the Charity Ball Association of San Antonio from its beginning in 1954. The bulk of the materials document the Association's annual Chrysanthemum Ball.

Content Abstract: Church Women United in Texas is an ecumenical community of Christian women in Texas who accept the purpose of the movement as stated in its bylaws. Originally formed in 1934, today CWU in Texas is composed of individual members and local units throughout the state. It is also affiliated with the national organization of Church Women United. Reports, minutes, financial records, correspondence, printed materials, photographs, and scrapbook material document the organization, structure, and activities of Church Women United in Texas. The bulk of the collection documents executive board meetings, leadership council meetings, and the annual state meetings, from 1960-1999. However, also included in the collection are financial records, documentation of the state organization's work with local units, and scrapbook materials extending the knowledge and understanding of the state unit's history.

The collection spans the years 1990 through 2000 and includes reports, minutes, proceedings, printed material, and other printed and scrapbook material of the Western Hills Unit. Materials document the organization, structure, and activities of the unit, dating from its establishment in 1990 until its disbandment in 2000. The unit's participation in CWU's state and national projects is described in these materials, but the bulk of the material covers local activities.

The San Antonio Alumnae Chapter as established on August 16, 1933, under the name of Psi Sigma Chapter. On August 23, 1958, the chapter was renamed San Antonio Alumnae Chapter. The chapter follows the philosophy upon which the national organization was founded, committed to engaging in public service, concern for social welfare, academic excellence and cultural enrichment. Content Abstract: Mrs. Bella Glasberg was an active member of several Jewish women’s organizations in San Antonio. The height of her activity occurred from the 1930’s to the 1960’s. She was elected president of the San Antonio Section, National Council of Jewish Women for the 1943-1944 term. Glasberg also served as president and was a long-term member of The San Antonio Chapter of Hadassah. The Bella Glasberg Papers document her involvement in San Antonio Jewish women’s organizations from 1936-1970, and consist of administrative records, printed materials, ephemera and a scrapbook.

Content Abstract: Chartered in 1996, the San Antonio Chapter of National Coalition of Black Women, Inc., strives to positively influence the lives of young African American females in San Antonio and to empower African American women in general, to reach their highest potential. The San Antonio chapter participates in community programs related to their mission. Its members also mentor in local elementary and middle schools to help young girls plan and eventually meet their career goals. Coalition members also hold Children's Community Health Fairs twice a year to promote a proactive approach to good health within the African American community. Content Abstract: Order of the Damas de Galvez is a women's unit of equal status to the men's Order of Granaderos de Galvez. Both are patriotic organizations dedicated to honoring the memory of General Bernardo de Galvez and other Spaniards who aided American Colonies during the War for Independence. Records include founding records, minutes, meetings, treasurer's reports, annual membership rosters, and correspondence concerning donations and events. The bulk of the records document the organization's functions during the 1990s.

Pals Social Club (San Antonio, Tex.)

Content Abstract: The Pals Social Club was conceived in 1925 as a way to mentor young African American women. Each year they hold a Debutante Presentation Ball to introduce that year's selected coterie. The African American women selected for the debutante coterie are college students and leaders who represent the club's moral and ethical standards. The bulk of the collection consists of newspaper clippings and photographs. Also included are 80th and 90th anniversary books.

Content Abstract: The Pan American Round Table (PART) was established October 16, 1916, in San Antonio, Texas. It is an independent, nonsectarian, nonpolitical, noncommercial and nonfederated women's organization. The purpose of the Pan American Round Tables is to acquaint members with the language, geography, history, literature, arts, culture, and customs of the republics of the Western Hemisphere, with the objective to foster mutual understanding, knowledge, and friendship among the peoples of the Western Hemisphere. The organizational records of The Pan American Round Table of San Antonio consist primarily of correspondence, minutes, reports, yearbooks, scrapbooks, programs and photographic materials that document the activities, interests, and events of the group. Most strongly documented are the initial years of the movement, when Florence Terry Griswold was Director, 1916-1941. Of note, the records include an extensive and rich collection of printed material, primarily bulletins, booklets, and Pan American Union publications, related to Panamericanism, Mexico, and Latin America prior to 1950.

The materials present a glimpse of general business activities carried out by board and committee members. The organization was the first African American group of Christian women to get a state charter for a local club. Activities of the group included four annual events: Fellowship Dinner, Pink Tea, Annual Sit-In, and a musical. The organization has contributed to and supported several charities. The collection spans the years 1945 through 1998 and includes legal documents, correspondence, event programs, membership rosters, minutes, newsclippings, newsletters, and a scrapbook. The collection documents the membership, fundraising activities, and functions of the San Antonio Mother's Service Organization.

San Antonio Women's Celebration and Hall of Fame

Content Abstract: The San Antonio Women's Celebration and Hall of Fame was established in 1984 by the Texas Governor's Commission for Women and is now known simply as the San Antonio Women's Hall of Fame. In addition to honoring outstanding women each year, the organization awards scholarships to high school and college students. The San Antonio Women's Celebration and Hall of Fame Records consist of administrative records, clippings, photographs, scrapbooks, printed materials, and a time capsule. The collection documents the everyday business of the organization from its inception in 1984 to 2020.

San Antonio Women's Chamber of Commerce

Content Abstract: The San Antonio Women's Chamber of Commerce (SAWCC) is an affiliate of the Women's Chamber of Commerce of Texas (WCCT), the first state statewide women's chamber of commerce in the United States. Like the WCCT the SAWCC is a non-profit organization whose mission is to promote growth and economic development of women and to achieve the integration of women into leadership roles within the social, political, and economic structures of the public and private spheres of society. The collection consists of board records, and documents related to projects, programs, and issues of concern. There is also a small section devoted to peripheral information about the larger state organization. The largest portion of the records in this collection are devoted to the organization's various programs and issues of concern such as providing women access to leadership roles within the social and political communities of San Antonio. Ephemera and videocassettes are also included in the collection.

Sorosis Club

Content Abstract: The Sorosis Club was one of the earliest clubs in San Antonio, Texas, organized exclusively for women in 1903. Originally called the Government Hill Literary Society, the group changed its name to Sorosis Club in 1913 when women from other parts of the city began joining the group. The final Sorosis Club meeting was held in May 2000 at the end of their 1999-2000 club year. The collection spans the years 1923 through 1991 and provides information about the club's members and activities primarily through minutes, photographs, scrapbooks and yearbooks.

Content Abstract: Storyletters is an international publication of women’s writing founded, edited, and produced by Dr. Katharine Kittu Riddle. Riddle began the publication in 1993 to provide a place for women to contribute and share their stories. Issues of Storyletters contain poetry, correspondence, and true stories written and contributed by women from around the world. The records consist of a brief history, issues of Storyletters, correspondence, and publications. Collectively, the records document the lives and experiences of women from diverse cultures through their own writing. Texas Lesbian Conference

Content Abstract: The Texas Lesbian Conference was begun in 1988 as a way for lesbians to network, learn and share. The yearly conference was begun by a small group of women in Dallas, Texas. Over the years the conference featured speakers and workshops on coming out, dating, network building, maintaining relationships, health issues, political activism, spirituality, legal issues, and financial matters. The bulk of the collection documents the yearly conferences and consists of correspondence, marketing materials, notes, questionnaires, programs, and research materials.

Texas Women Lawyers

Content Abstract: Texas Women Lawyers, formally established in 1994, is an umbrella group of women's bar associations and organizations created to share ideas and resources and speak effectively with a common voice on women's issues in the legal profession. The group provides assistance and information to other legal women's groups in Texas through networking, mentoring, legislative updates, and a database of member information including areas of practice. The group also sponsors quarterly socials in each region, coupled with informal and informational continuing legal education, to foster new and better relationships among women lawyers for business development, mentoring and friendship. The collection spans the years 1994 through 2005 and includes bylaws, correspondence, financial information, meeting minutes, membership lists, the organization's newsletter Women's Link, photographs, publicity, and a copy of the website. These materials primarily reflect the first three years of the organization, and include information about the coming together of Texas women's legal organizations to form Texas Women Lawyers. Of note is the correspondence that chronicles the communications between the women who worked to bring together representatives from women's legal organizations throughout the states.

Texas Women's Alliance

Content Abstract: The Texas Women's Alliance (TWA) is a nonprofit women's organization that researches issues, makes policy recommendations, and works to influence government, with a focus on Texas affairs. Formed in 1984, the founders of the TWA believed there was a need for an organization to represent conservative and business-oriented women. The TWA attempts to recruit women who are professional, business and civic leaders; its activities include conducting seminars and conferences on issues, publishing position papers, and testifying before Texas Senate and House committees. This collection spans the years 1984 through 1995 and includes meeting minutes, reports, position papers, correspondence and other papers, document the history, activities, programs and policy positions of the Texas Women's Alliance (TWA), in its first 11 years. The collection reflects TWA's position on the state budget, economic growth, international trade, U.S.-Mexico relations, tax reform, judicial selection (merit election of judges), public school reform, higher education funding, and pay equity.

Tuesday Musical Club (San Antonio, Tex.)

Content Abstract: Founded in 1901, the Tuesday Musical Club is the oldest music club for women in Texas. The Club promotes and supports the performance and discussion of classical music. The bulk of the collection is comprised of scrapbooks and meeting minutes. Also included are numerous printed programs from musical performances sponsored by the club.

Woman's Club of San Antonio

Content Abstract: The Woman's Club of San Antonio, a club organized for charitable work, education and fellowship, was founded on October 1, 1898. It is the oldest women's civic and social organization in San Antonio, and was the first women's club in Texas to endorse women's suffrage. Records document the structure, activities, interests, events, and business transactions of the Woman's Club of San Antonio. Of note are membership applications, 1937-1982; Fiesta programs, 1945-1994; and yearbooks, 1900-2016. The core of the Club's activities are documented in the records of the Roundtables.

Womanspace

Content Abstract: WomanSpace was the longest continuously published women's community newsletter in San Antonio. The records consist mainly of newsletters, but also contain submissions to the newsletter and event planning materials.

Women of the 80's.

Content Abstract: Women of the 80's was annual conference in the 1980's to honor outstanding San Antonio women in their career fields, and to recognize their up-and-coming protégées. The bulk of the collection consists of planning materials, correspondence, agendas, scrapbooks and assorted printed materials.

Women's Legislative Caucus (Texas)

Content Abstract: The exhibit originated as a Texas Sesquicentennial project funded at state expense through members of the Women's Legislative Caucus, a group consisting of women House members. The exhibit was first shown in 1987. In 1994, the exhibit was updated with funding by Patrick M.W. Johnson. Johnson and Kelly Martino of Houston collected new photographs, created, designed, and constructed the updated exhibit; subsequent updates were made in later years. The original exhibit was freestanding with images of women legislators mounted and matted on blue particleboard. To complete the exhibit, eight Texas artists volunteered their time and talent to sketch the portraits of women officeholders whose photographs were unavailable. The collection consists of 77 portraits of women who have served in the Texas legislature, as well as accompanying captions and credits displayed in the Women in Texas Government exhibit.

Women's Overseas Service League

Content Abstract: The Women's Overseas Service League (WOSL) was founded in 1921 by women who had served in World War I. The group initially existed as local units, but soon became a national organization and began publishing the quarterly magazine Carry On. An annual convention was also established in 1921 and has been held every year except during the World War II years of 1942-1945. WOSL was the first women's organization to contribute to UNICEF and was one of the first organizations to be an accredited observer at the United Nations. The records of the Women's Overseas Service League document the everyday business and functions of the organization. The records include correspondence, minutes, reports, photographs, scrapbooks and printed materials. Insight into the organization is offered from a national and local perspective. The collection exposes the fundamental operations that were carried out by the members of WOSL.

The records primarily consist of printed and photographic materials that document Zonta Club membership, service activities, social events, and the individual achievements of members. Reflected in the records is the participation of business and professional women in public life in San Antonio, Texas.
