Almaráz, Félix D. (Félix Diaz), 1933-

Content Abstract: Dr. Félix D. Almaráz, Jr., is Professor Emeritus of History at the University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA). He began teaching at UTSA in 1973, the first year the university offered classes. Working in the UTSA History Department, Almaráz taught classes on the Spanish Borderlands, Spanish Colonial Texas, Imperial Spain, Modern Spain, history of South Texas, Modern Texas history, and the cultural origins of San Antonio. The collection spans the years 1963 through 2006 and documents the teaching, research, writing, and service of Dr. Félix D. Almaráz, professor of history at the University of Texas at San Antonio. Content Abstract: Gilbert C. (Gil) Barrera was a freelance photographer who was employed by the University of Texas at San Antonio to photograph its building and organization from 1972 to 1978. The collection consists of photographic negatives and contact sheets created by Gil Barrera from 1972 through 1978 while employed to photograph the physical complex and activities of the University of Texas at San Antonio. Among the subjects represented in the collection are construction projects, ceremonies, graduating classes, concerts, distinguished visitors, conference participants, students, professors, and members of the University of Texas administration and Board of Regents.

Content Abstract: Dr. Peter T. Flawn was the second president of the University of Texas at San Antonio, serving from 1973 to 1977. Flawn oversaw many milestones during his five-year tenure. Hieronymus was the first woman appointed to full professor at UTSA and the first person to receive a doctor of musical arts degree in organ performance and musicology from the University of Texas at Austin. Content Abstract: Frank Lombardino (1929-1992), conservative Democrat and the self-proclaimed “father of the University of Texas at San Antonio,” served in the Texas State House of Representatives from 1967-1975 and in the Texas State Senate from 1975-1979. House and Senate bills supported or initiated by, or of interest to, Frank Lombardino are at the core of this collection. The bills are in many forms (engrossed, enrolled, etc.) and constitute the largest portion of the collection. Some folders contain only copies of bills or other legislative materials, but other folders include relevant non-legislative materials, such as correspondence, memoranda, newspaper clippings, reports, magazine articles, and other printed materials.

Content Abstract: Albar Peña served as a professor in the Department of Bicultural-Bilingual Studies at UTSA beginning in 1973 until his death in 1993. He was the first president of the National Association for Bilingual Education, twice served as the president of the Texas Association for Bilingual Education, he was selected as U.S. representative at the International Colloquium in Bilingualism and Biculturalism, Paris, France, and he was also selected as chairman of the National Advisory Panel to the National Clearinghouse on Bilingual Education. Content Abstract: Carmen Perry was the first Special Collections Librarian in the Library of the University of Texas at San Antonio. She held this position from 1974 until her retirement in 1981. She was named a fellow by the Texas State Historical Association subsequent to the 1975 publication of With Santa Anna in Texas: A Personal Narrative of the Revolution, her translation of the "De la Peña diary" (La Rebelión de Texas). The collection spans the years 1973 through 1988 and documents Perry's tenure as Special Collections Librarian at the University of Texas at San Antonio Library, the publication of Perry's With Santa Anna in Texas: A Personal Narrative of the Revolution, and subsequent primary source research in Spain. Content Abstract: The Beta Upsilon Chapter of the Phi Sigma Society, a national honorary science fraternity, was established at the University of Texas at San Antonio in October 1974. The chapter was the first registered student organization at the University of Texas at San Antonio and included 36 faculty members and students. The collection comprises a spiral-bound booklet prepared by the Beta Upsilon Chapter of the Phi Sigma Society. The materials in the booklet document the establishment, development, and activities of the student chapter from 1974 through 1975. Materials include correspondence and memoranda, a written history, an application to the society, a petition for the establishment of the chapter, by-laws, a registration form for student organizations at UTSA, a list of officers, photographs of the initiation and installation ceremony, a press release and news coverage of the establishment of the chapter, and flyers advertising the chapter's events.

Content Abstract: Jacinto Quirarte was a professor emeritus and former dean of the College of Fine and Applied Arts at the University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA). As an art historian and author, he concentrated on Pre-Columbian and Chicano art history. The papers span the years 1944 through 2009 and include correspondence, speeches, administrative records, articles, manuscripts for publication, newsletters, posters, and photographs. The bulk of the materials date from the 1970s to the 1990s. The collection documents Quirarte’s career at UTSA as founding dean of the College of Fine and Applied Arts (now the College of Liberal and Fine Arts) and a professor emeritus. Research materials focus on Pre-Columbian and Chicano art, in addition to research on the Spanish Missions in Texas.

Content Abstract: Linda Kay Schott was an Associate Professor of History and American Studies, and Director of the Center for the Study of Women and Gender, at the University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA). Schott was the driving force behind the establishment of the Archives for Research on Women and Gender at UTSA, now the UTSA Libraries Special Collections Department. The collection chiefly includes writings and teaching materials, with some personal items. Writings include Schott's dissertation, as well as numerous scholarly articles and a book manuscript pertaining to American history, with an emphasis on women's history. Teaching materials primarily document Schott's positions at Texas Lutheran University and Southwest Texas State University (now Texas State University) and include Schott's notes, syllabi, articles, and general curriculum information. Personal items comprise correspondence, school papers, and newspaper clippings.

The College of Business has overseen a number of research institutes, including the Institute for Studies in Business (ISB), the Center for Studies in Business, Economics, and Human Resources, the Human Resources and Development Program, Center for Global Entrepreneurship, and the Center for Innovation and Technology Entrepreneurship (CITE). Content Abstract: The Department of Art and Art History dates back to the earliest years of the University of Texas at San Antonio. The studio art curriculum was designed to prepare students for either professional careers in studio art or for teaching. The main fields of concentration have included painting, drawing, sculpture, photography, printmaking, and ceramics. Records consist of 100 fine art prints in five suites. These prints were either collected or produced by members of the Art Department, and were created using a variety of printmaking techniques, including lithography, intaglio, etching, and serigraphy.

Content Abstract: The Institute of Texan Cultures (ITC), a museum and campus of the University of Texas at San Antonio, was established in 1965 by the 59th Texas Legislature. Its first director was R. Henderson Shuffler, who served as director from 1965-1975. Originally housing the Texas Pavilion at HemisFair '68, it was designed to study the ethnic groups that settled in Texas. In addition to its 50,000 square feet of exhibits featuring twenty-seven cultures and ethnic groups, the institute hosts the Texas Children's Festival, Pioneer Sunday, the Texas Folklife Festival, and other events. The collection spans the years 1941 through 2003 and includes the administrative records of various Institute of Texan Cultures (ITC) departments. The records document the history of the ITC and its relationship with HemisFair '68, as well as exhibit planning, instructional programs, and projects planned by or proposed to the ITC. Dr. Jude Valdez was the first and only Vice President for Downtown Operations. The office was dissolved in approximately 1995.
