Content Abstract: Norfleet Giddings Bone, born in 1892, was a landscape designer and civil engineer, serving in World War II in the United States Army Air Corps. He served as the Supervising Landscape Architect and Landscape Engineer for Randolph Air Force Base (San Antonio, Texas), which was created as a training base for pilots. During this time, he also supervised the landscape design at Barksdale Air Force Base in Shreveport, Louisiana. Bone worked for the Army Corps of Engineers in their San Antonio District Office during World War II. While with the Army Corps of Engineers, Bone was responsible for maintaining the landscaping and grassing of the flying fields at bases around Texas. After World War II, Bone moved back to Austin and worked with the Texas State Parks Board until his retirement in 1963. The collections spans the years 1917 through 1980 and contains correspondence, photographs, reports, specifications, maps, drawings, newsclippings, plant lists, and blueprints that document the life and work of a twentieth century landscape architect and civil engineer.

He was also a notary public and President of the Medina Highlands Toll Road Association. The Frank J. Bosshardt Papers comprise various legal documents from the late 19th and early 20th centuries, created both by Bosshardt and fellow San Antonio attorney Horace Shelton. These materials help to document the geographic and economic growth of San Antonio during this period.

Claiming she was 18, Bufton joined the Women's Royal Naval Air Service during World War I in 1915. She was a 30-year member, and past president (1962-1964) of the Women's Overseas Service League, a national organization of women who served overseas during times of military conflict. The collection consists of an image of Anne Bufton in uniform on a train departing from Merheim, Germany in 1919, and an August 8, 2000 article from the Camas-Washougal Post-Record newspaper on Bufton's life.

Content Abstract: Richard Kenneth Caldwell (1934-2016) grew up on Cupples Road in the Edgewood community of San Antonio. He attended Edgewood elementary and junior schools and Brackenridge High School. After graduating in 1952 he enlisted in the United States Navy and served his tenure. Upon returning he attended St. Mary’s University for both his bachelor's and master’s. In 1969 he accepted a position as a staff psychologist at the San Antonio State Hospital, first serving in the narcotic addict rehabilitation program. He retired in 1994 after 25 years as an associate clinical psychologist in Bonham Hall. Caldwell also helped found the San Antonio Free Clinic. This collection consists of material pertaining to Caldwell family reunions and Caldwell’s research into his own genealogy It chronicles Caldwell’s educational and professional experience focusing in on his time at the Department of Defense, the San Antonio Free Clinic, and the San Antonio State Hospital. Correspondence, notebooks, diaries, newsclippings, photographs and a historical fiction manuscript documents the life of Aline B. Carter and five generations of her family. Content Abstract: Communities Organized for Public Service (COPS) is an organization of 26 parishes in the predominantly Hispanic, low-income West Side and South Side of San Antonio. Founded in 1974, it is the oldest of the Interfaith Area Foundation (IAF) organizations in Texas and, indeed, in the entire national network. CORAL Union was founded on 13 December 1966; and at that time, the consortium included: Incarnate Word College, Our Lady of the Lake University, St. Mary’s University, San Antonio College, San Antonio Library, Southwest Research Institute, Southwest Foundation for Research and Education, Trinity University, and the University of Texas Medical School at San Antonio. These charter members carried out the mission of CORAL—to share sources—by creating the first union list of sources.The CORAL Union Records consist of administrative records, financial records, memorandums, correspondence, newsletters, and grant documents. The chapter follows the philosophy upon which the national organization was founded, committed to engaging in public service, concern for social welfare, academic excellence and cultural enrichment. Content Abstract: Margaret Bridget Duggan was commissioned in the United States Air Force in 1963 and served overseas in Okinawa, Japan, and Thailand. From 1975-1977, she was commander of a basic military training squadron at Lackland Air Force Base in Texas. In 1977, Margaret Duggan was sent to Iran to integrate women into the Iranian armed forces, but had to flee in 1979 when the Shah of Iran was overthrown. She retired from the Air Force in 1982. The bulk of this collection is comprised of awards, photographs, scrapbooks, and correspondence.

The Fiesta San Antonio Commission records document the agency and its function, as well as the festival itself. Content Abstract: Patricia Finley was born into a military family in 1919 at West Point, New York. She enjoyed writing journals, poems, and short stories and often participated in writing workshops where she wrote about her own experiences and recollections. After attending three different high schools, Finley graduated in 1935 at the age of 16 in Junction City, Kansas. After graduation, she moved with her family to Vermont where she attended college. In 1941, she went to work for the United States government at Camp Beauregard, Louisiana until 1942. She married Glenn Finley, United States Army 2nd Lieutenant, in 1943 and together they had four children. She was a writer in San Antonio during the 1980s and 1990s. The collection spans the years 1941 through 1993 with the bulk of the material from 1986-1993. It is mostly comprised of writings including autobiographical essays, poetry, handwritten notes, clippings, photographs, letters, souvenirs, a writing aptitude test, various reading material, and assignments from the workshops she attended.

Content Abstract: Arcenio A. Garcia was elected Mayor of Cotulla, Texas in 1972 as a member of the Raza Unida Party, becoming the first Mexican-American to serve as mayor of the city. He also won the 1974 election, but was removed from the position when the city council ruled that Mr. Garcia was living outside Cotulla at the time of the election. In 1976, Garcia was elected County Commissioner of Precinct #3 in La Salle County, Texas. In addition to his positions as Mayor and County Commissioner, Garcia was a member of Barrios Unidos, a public service organization, which he served as Chairperson and Public Official on the Board. He was also editor of the bulletin El Informador (The Informer). The collection documents Garcia's work as Chairperson of Barrios Unidos, Mayor of Cotulla and County Commissioner of Precinct #3 of La Salle County. It also includes general information related to the Raza Unida Party and Garcia as a member of the Democratic Party of Texas.

The collection is comprised of original pen and ink and mixed media comic panels and strips, composed on matte paper and art board.

Glasberg also served as president and was a long-term member of The San Antonio Chapter of Hadassah. The Bella Glasberg Papers document her involvement in San Antonio Jewish women’s organizations from 1936-1970, and consist of administrative records, printed materials, ephemera and a scrapbook.

While she contributed important legislation to other causes such as worker safety, Glossbrenner is most known for her victories in the realm of public education. The Ernestine Glossbrenner Papers document the State Representative's career through correspondence, legal documentation, photographs, awards and printed materials. These papers also include materials of her time as an educator before assuming office in 1977. Finally, a small amount of her post-political activities are documented through 1996. He was also one of the co-founders of La Raza Unida political party that helped to raise public consciousness of Chicano civil rights issues. The papers consist of correspondence, reports, minutes, publications, articles, photographic materials, audio tapes, posters, and ephemera. These materials document the breadth of José Angel Gutiérrez's interests, research and social activism early in his career. The bulk of the materials document Gutiérrez's activities in Oregon during the 1980s.

Content Abstract: Henry Patrick Drought was born in 1858 in County Clare, Ireland. He eventually settled in San Antonio, Texas to take the Bar examination and establish a law practice. Drought became the attorney for Francis Smith, Caldwell and Company, the San Antonio branch of an investment firm that acted as a financial liaison between Texas farmers and ranchers seeking money to expand their land and agriculture operations, and British and Scottish financiers who had money to lend and were looking for greater returns on their investments than European markets could. Drought purchased the company with Francis Smith, and after Smith's retirement, the company came to be known as H. P. Drought and Company. Under his guidance, the company became one of the most successful investment firms in San Antonio. Prior to his death, Drought's son, Henry Patrick Drought, Jr., became a partner. The collection consists of mortgage investment records made between the company and local and international investors from 1884 to 1969. These records include financial ledgers, correspondence, abstracts of title, and contracts documenting mortgage and loan transactions. Of note are descriptions of property and the names of investors, landowners, and businesses in San Antonio, Texas.

She joined the staff of the university in February 1973 as a secretary and retired in 2005 after devoting 35 years of service to the University of Texas System (1966-2005). The papers date from 1971-2002 and relate to her career at The University of Texas at San Antonio. The collection includes paper documents, photographs, and artifacts.

Content Abstract: Robert F. Heizer was a professor of anthropology at the University of California at Berkeley and a member of several archaeological and anthropological societies. Heizer organized and directed the University of California Archaeological Survey from 1948-1960 and was coordinator of its successor, the Archaeological Research Facility, from 1960-1976. Heizer performed landmark studies in Olmec Archaeology, particularly at the site of La Venta, beginning in 1953. The Robert F. Heizer Papers span the years 1957 through 1991 and consist of correspondence, writings, and subject files, the bulk of the materials being Heizer's subject files on rock art and ancient methods of securing, transporting, and positioning extremely heavy stones.

Content Abstract: Julius Joske immigrated to San Antonio and established the first Joske's store in 1867. The business developed into a popular statewide department store chain with 26 locations in Texas. The business ended when it was purchased by Dillard's in 1987. The records reflect a small portion of the general business functions of the flagship Joske's department store in San Antonio. The collection is mostly composed of financial and administrative records.

Thep papers document discrimination cases (1989-1996) that Kretzschmar filed against management at Fort Sam Houston. He trained at Scott Field, Illinois, and later went to Europe and Africa to fight in World War II. Content Abstract: Arcadia Hernandez Lopez was born December 21, 1909, and came to the West Side of San Antonio with her family as refugees from the Mexican Revolution. She overcame a language barrier and poverty to earn her Doctorate and become one of the first bilingual educators in Texas. She was the author of her own biography, and was married but had no children. She died at the age of 97, donating funds in her will to establish the UTSA Arcadia Lopez Endowed Scholarship fund for bilingual education. Boxes contain albums of photographs, clippings, and cards; a datebook; Margil yearbook from 1920 from Our Lady of the Lake University; scrapbooks documenting her life, travels and career, consist of photographs, clippings, certificates, and various cards; a distinguished service award; and Santitos.

Content Abstract: As the site of one of San Antonio's first centralized wastewater treatment projects, Mitchell Lake spent most of the 20th century as a sewage collection site. The lake is positioned on a natural migratory bird route and serves as a resting point for tens of thousands of birds each year. When discharge of raw or partially treated effluent was discontinued in 1987, Mitchell Lake was recognized as a world-class bird-watching site. Bird watchers come from all over the world to see the unique variety of birds that visit there. Mitchell Lake Wetlands Society was a support group that assisted San Antonio Water System in protecting and developing the wildlife sanctuary. The bulk of the collection consists of administrative records, including correspondence, minutes, reports and financial records. Also included are typescript drafts, research materials and photographs.

Content Abstract: James Morgan (1787-1866) was a Texas pioneer, merchant, land speculator and Commander at Galveston during the Texas Revolution (1835-1836). He first came to Texas in 1830. In 1834, during the feverish era of speculation just prior to the Texas Revolution, Morgan organized an ambitious land venture called the New Washington Association. The collection is comprised of twenty-eight documents and letters. All but two of the documents were written before 1841. Most of the documents are related to Morgan and the establishment of the New Washington Association. Many of the documents bear Morgan’s own notes and docketing; some of them are his drafts or retaining copies.

The records reflect a brief period of time during which this Texas group had problems maintaining an active membership and received guidance and support from regional officers (called field representatives and section advisors). Content Abstract: This is a scrapbook of Edward Necker and new wife Mariquita (Necker) during their honeymoon to Mexico, June 1940. It contains 157 private black and white photos accompanied by detailed captions on most of the collection. Necker’s scrapbook details a long list of locales he and his new wife visited during their trip to Mexico. He also provides a 28-page typescript narrating their experiences and meticulously documenting their trip from south Texas through Laredo, Monterrey and the interior of Mexico.

Richard Negley founded Negley Paint Company and was director of Alamo National Bank in San Antonio. The couple had 3 sons, two of whom lost their lives in World War II. The collection primarily consists of correspondence between Laura Burleson Negley and her immediate family members. These papers show the social and business ties that the family maintained in San Antonio, and illustrate the etiquette and social customs of the time. The papers also personalize the war experience (WWII) and its impact on families in San Antonio.

He served as President of both the Merchants Ice and Cold Storage Company and the Seguin Milling and Power Company. He also succeeded his father as head of the banking firm E. Nolte and Sons, one of the earliest banking firms in Seguin.Eugene "Mike" Nolte, Jr., like his father, was a powerful voice in the Republican Party and a noted businessman. This collection consists of correspondence, newspaper clippings and photographs. Most of the material is from Eugene Nolte Sr.'s years as Republican State Executive Committee Chairman from 1921 to 1933. Eugene Nolte Jr. is also prominent in the collection. In addition to Republican Party activities, the material also documents the business and other activities of the Nolte family in the community of Seguin Texas.

Nye has also worked as a visiting writer in schools at all grade levels and universities and has won several national awards. The collection includes the typescripts, manuscripts, drafts, proofs, and other pre-publication forms of the writings of poet and writer Naomi Shihab Nye. Writings include early and revised drafts of poems, essays, and other writings. Published work is supplemented by hundreds of unpublished poems. These working papers are accompanied by notebooks dating back to Nye's school years, an extensive correspondence file with authors, editors, publishers, family members and fans, copies of her publications in book form, and her contributions to books and journals. Content Abstract: John Robert Peace, Jr. (1917-1974) was a Texas lawyer and public official. He served on the University of Texas Board of Regents from 1967-1973 (Chair, 1971-1973). He is credited with being a driving force in the establishment of the University of Texas at San Antonio. Peace also was an avid collector of Texana, and he amassed a collection of about 900 books and 500 manuscripts, some dating back to the 1700s. The collection is comprised of materials collected by John R. Peace, Jr. Materials document Texas history. Historical manuscripts comprise more than 350 documents--both original manuscripts and printed material--related to Texas history, concentrating on the periods before 1860. The documents consist of historical manuscripts, copies and transcriptions of original documents, dated 1825-1840. Other documents, mostly undated but circa 1954, consist of letters, newspaper articles, transcriptions, drafts and notes.

He was the first president of the National Association for Bilingual Education, twice served as the president of the Texas Association for Bilingual Education, he was selected as U.S. representative at the International Colloquium in Bilingualism and Biculturalism, Paris, France, and he was also selected as chairman of the National Advisory Panel to the National Clearinghouse on Bilingual Education. A self-proclaimed "Chicano Activist," Judge Peña has been actively involved in a wide range of liberal social causes, particularly in defending and advancing the rights of Mexican-Americans, throughout his legal and political career. This collection of papers reflects many of Judge Peña's interests and his involvement in local and national Democratic party politics. Although the collection dates from 1952-1977, the bulk of the materials cover Peña's tenure as Bexar County Commissioner from 1956-1972.

Content Abstract: Frederich Perine was an avid collector of historic bibles and early printing examples. Perine created his collection in 1915, and in the 1960s it attracted the attention of Harry and Alma Dietert, who encouraged and contributed to its development. The Perine-Dietert Collection contains single leaves, fragments, and facsimiles of written or printed religious and secular works from the East and West dating back to approximately 200 CE. The bulk of the collection is comprised of bibles and religious works ranging from the 16th century to the 1970s.

The chapter was the first registered student organization at the University of Texas at San Antonio and included 36 faculty members and students. The collection comprises a spiral-bound booklet prepared by the Beta Upsilon Chapter of the Phi Sigma Society. The materials in the booklet document the establishment, development, and activities of the student chapter from 1974 through 1975. Content Abstract: Linda and Cynthia Phillips were married in Dallas in 1958. Over the years, the couple became prominent within the transgender community of Central and South Texas. Linda and Cynthia also became affiliated with many transgender organizations. The most notable was the Boulton and Park Society of San Antonio, which the couple joined shortly after its formation in 1986. They also had a strong presence in the San Antonio community as the primary organizers of the Texas "T" Party, a Boulton and Park-sponsored event that became the largest annual convention for crossdressers in the nation. The Phillips gained national exposure in the early 1990s following their appearances on major television talk shows. Much of their time during the 1990s was dedicated to educating the public and other members of the transgender community on their experiences as a transgender couple. The Linda and Cynthia Phillips Papers document the couple's attempt to educate other transgender singles and couples based on experience gained in their own relationship. Additionally, the collection reflects the Phillips' active involvement in raising awareness of the transgender culture among the general population. Included are newsletters, articles, announcements, pamphlets, papers, magazines, and correspondence collected by the couple during the time of their association with the Boulton and Park Society. For their collaboration with the Fiesta Dinner Playhouse in San Antonio, Jesse and Robert became known as the "hairdressers to the stars." Content Abstract: Francille Radmann was a job search trainer for the Texas Employment Commission (TEC) between 1971 and 1999. In this state-funded position she taught people basic job search and interviewing skills. When the TEC was reformed into the Texas Workforce Commission (TWC) in 1996, many employees were concerned with the outcome of the transition, and what it would mean for state employee benefits and jobs. During and after the transition, Radmann was involved in state workers rights issues, and held membership in the Texas State Employees Union for the Communication Workers of America. She also lobbied against Texas state legislation that would decrease benefits for state workers and would allow the privatization of jobs currently held by state workers. The collection spans the years 1969 through 1999 and documents Francille Radmann's work for the Texas Employment Commission (TEC) and state workers' concerns that resulted from the transition of the Texas Employment Commission to the Texas Workforce Commission (TWC). Content Abstract: William Louis and Emma Frances Solcher Richter opened the first Richter's Bakery in downtown San Antonio, Texas in 1882. In 1912, W.L. Richter expanded business again when he bought the Butter Krust franchise. Eventually, Richter built a modern plant to accommodate increased demand. By 1920, Richter had built another plant across the street, which was able to produce 110,000 to 150,000 loaves a day. The Richter's Bakeries corporation was dissolved in 1997. The Richter's Bakery collection consists of photographs, microfilms, and a written history of the San Antonio bakery and its proprietors, William Louis Richter and Emma Solcher Richter.

Content Abstract: Daniel Salinas was one of the first Mexican-Americans to enlist in the Army Air Force in 1942, at the age of 21. After completion of his military training he was sent to Italy where he flew 76 missions during World War II. Upon returning to the United States he married Ana Maria Salinas and moved to San Antonio, Texas; they lived there for a short time before returning to Laredo, Texas. After moving back to Laredo, Daniel Salinas worked for his uncle at Salinas Department Store. He eventually went on to open his own store, Salinas Variety Store. He also worked as an accountant for three firms in Laredo. The Daniel Salinas Papers span the years 1937-1999 (with the bulk of the materials dating 1943-1945) and is comprised of military and personal papers. Materials include photographs, correspondence, training manuals, government documents, yearbooks, obituary notices, newspaper clippings, postcards, records of business transactions, and a Certificate of Baptism.

Content Abstract: The Casino Association, San Antonio's first social club, was formed in 1854 and incorporated in 1857. It was formed to promote cultural and literary activities in the city. Membership was initially limited to ethnic German men but commissioned U.S. military officers in San Antonio had a standing invitation to be guests at the club. Over time, the membership of the club broadened but the Casino Association was where the elite of San Antonio's German community gathered. Much of the club's early business and conversation was conducted in German. In 1925, the Casino Association was consolidated with the San Antonio Club, a literary society formed in 1882. Together the clubs formed the San Antonio and Casino Clubs, also known as the San Antonio-Casino Club. The San Antonio-Casino Club was dissolved around 1950. The collection contains correspondence, articles of incorporation, account books, mortgage notes, financial and legal records, and guest lists, which document the activities of the members and officers of the San Antonio and Casino Clubs. Schott was the driving force behind the establishment of the Archives for Research on Women and Gender at UTSA, now the UTSA Libraries Special Collections Department. The collection chiefly includes writings and teaching materials, with some personal items. Writings include Schott's dissertation, as well as numerous scholarly articles and a book manuscript pertaining to American history, with an emphasis on women's history. Content Abstract: This Austin-based, non-profit organization provides one to two weeks of free housing, serigraphy instruction, and use of serigraphy equipment for ten to fifteen artists per year. It was founded by printmaker Sam Coronado in 1993, and takes place at Coronado Studio in Austin, Texas. The collection consists of 251 serigraphy prints made by over 200 artists during their participation in the Serie Print Project between 1993 and 2010.

Content Abstract: Dr. Benjamin Borroum Shaver, son of Lillie Terrell Shaver, was born in San Marcos, Texas, on June 17, 1914. The Shaver family moved to San Antonio when Benjamin Shaver turned twelve years old. Dr. Shaver was still a practicing physician at age 90 at the NABI Biomedical Center in San Antonio. The collection comprises a photograph album, a 1932 San Antonio Junior College yearbook, two loose photographs, and an invitation for a dance at the New York University gymnasium, dated 1903.

Content Abstract: The Society of Mayflower Descendants in the State of Texas, a state chapter of the General Society of Mayflower Descendants, was founded in San Antonio, Texas on December 24, 1931. The goals of the Society are to join together people who share a common ancestry and to educate the public about the role of the Pilgrims and the Mayflower Compact in the early history and development of the United States. The Texas chapter began when fourteen members convened the first meeting in San Antonio in December 1931. The collection spans the years 1931 through 2021 and documents the activities of the state chapter and the duties performed by the Society's officers. Records include correspondence, legal documents, articles of incorporation, constitution and bylaws, membership ledgers and index cards, photographs, newsletters published by the Connecticut Society and some material connected with the General Society of Mayflower Descendants. There is also a wooden chest used by the Texas Society to display its charter, the names of the charter members and other historical items.

Content Abstract: The Kathryn Stoner O'Connor Mexican Manuscript Collection, collected by the Sons of the Republic of Texas, comprises 30 linear feet of printed and manuscript documents, periodicals, pamphlets, and broadsides, predominantly written in Spanish, and ranging in date from the 16th through the 20th centuries. The collection includes government documents, financial records, legal petitions, political and ecclesiastical decrees, wills and legal testaments, and personal and business letters. The collection covers a broad array of topics, including information on government, politics, finances, work, religion, social status, marriage and family, and numerous other subjects of social and historical interest.

Content Abstract: The Sorosis Club was one of the earliest clubs in San Antonio, Texas, organized exclusively for women in 1903. Originally called the Government Hill Literary Society, the group changed its name to Sorosis Club in 1913 when women from other parts of the city began joining the group. The final Sorosis Club meeting was held in May 2000 at the end of their 1999-2000 club year. The collection spans the years 1923 through 1991 and provides information about the club's members and activities primarily through minutes, photographs, scrapbooks and yearbooks.

Content Abstract: In 1974, William C. Velásquez established the Southwest Voter Registration and Education Project (SVREP) in San Antonio, Texas. SVREP is responsible for conducting thousands of voter registration drives. These events have registered over two million Latino voters, and they allow individuals to play an active role in their community through education and training. The Southwest Voter Research Institute (SVRI) was established in 1984 in conjunction with SVREP. SVRI’s mission is to conduct in-depth research in order to provide the public and Latino leaders with relevant information concerning the political opinions and behavior of Latinos. SVREP and the SVRI worked both collaboratively and independently, and they played an essential role in Latino voter mobilization and participation. The Southwest Voter Registration Education Project collection is separated into eight series: Organizational Files; Department Files; Reference, Writings, and Publications; Projects; Artifacts and Ephemera; Photographics; Electronic and Audio Visual Materials; and Maps. These series pertain to the history and growth of the organization.

Content Abstract: Herbert John Spiro was a noted educator in political science, a U.S. ambassador, and a candidate for public office. Spiro spent over a decade as a member of the faculty at Harvard, and taught political science at Amherst College and the University of Pennsylvania and published thirteen books on government. From 1970-1975, Spiro was a senior member of the policy planning staff at the U.S. State Department, and under President Ford became ambassador to Equatorial Guinea and Cameroon. Correspondence, course work, notes, papers, classified files, audio and videotapes, photographs, literary manuscripts, and printed materials spanning 1946-1994 document Herbert J. Spiro's education and teaching career, military service, government service, and involvement in politics and political campaigns. The bulk of the collection consists of academia office files, correspondence, course notes and lecture notes from Spiro's teaching career at Harvard, Amherst, University of Pennsylvania, and University of Texas.

Content Abstract: John Mathias Steinfeldt, known as the Dean of Texas Pianists, was a composer, pianist and organist and a Master-teacher. In San Antonio, he served as organist at the First Baptist church, San Fernando Cathedral and at Temple Beth-El. Steinfeldt gave lessons and encouraged the study of music throughout his career. He was president of the San Antonio College of Music, which he founded in 1920. He had four children with wife Vivia May Steinfeldt: Cecile, John Jr., Robert and Eric. Cecile and John Jr. were also accomplished musicians and taught for a few years at the San Antonio College of Music. Music scores, correspondence and scrapbooks, which contain clippings and other ephemera. The material, most of which dates from 1900-1954, documents events in the career and personal life of John M. Steinfeldt. The collection includes some of his musical compositions, including published works, drafts, sketches and fragments of his work. Some material also concerns the activities of his wife and children, particularly those of his daughter Cecile.

Content Abstract: Charles Lewellen Stevens was born in 1873 in Cuba, New York. He was a musician, bandleader and vaudeville performer, and played with a number of musical groups including the San Antonio Band and the Beaumont Concert Band (he was also director). In addition, he served as Secretary-Treasurer of the San Antonio Musicians' Society, Local 23 of the American Federation of Musicians. From 1918 to 1943, Stevens worked for the San Antonio Police Department. He died in San Antonio in September 1946. Photographs, music scores, correspondence and news clippings concerning the activities of Charles L. Stevens and his family. Of particular note is the photographs series which contain portraits of several generations of the family. The family of Mr. Stevens' first wife, Minna Erbe Stevens is also well represented in the collection. Most of the material was produced during Mr. Stevens' lifetime (1873-1946).

Content Abstract: Stewart Title Company was a company that abstracted land titles. It was founded in the 1890s in Galveston, Texas, by Maco Stewart. The Stewart family incorporated under the name Stewart Title Guaranty Company in 1908 and two years later opened an office in Dallas. In 1911, the Stewarts established an office in San Antonio by leasing and later purchasing Bexar Abstract Company's records. Stewart Title Company went on to expand outside of Texas beginning in 1956. The Stewart Title Company Records are, in part, a compilation of the land records obtained by Stewart Title Company as a result of its acquisition of Bexar Abstract Company in 1911. The records also include the company's own land records which were built upon those acquired from 1911 forward. Additionally, there are some administrative and client records that were maintained by both Stewart Title and its parent companies.

Riddle began the publication in 1993 to provide a place for women to contribute and share their stories. The records consist of a brief history, issues of Storyletters, correspondence, and publications. Collectively, the records document the lives and experiences of women from diverse cultures through their own writing. The collection also provides insight into readers' opinions and views on the publication.

An item of note in this collection is the Master plan for the creation of the River Walk and its expansion for HemisFair, the 1968 World's Fair.

Content Abstract: Joe Stubblefield worked as an architect in San Antonio, Texas, from 1972 until his death in 2007. His major architectural projects in the San Antonio area included the San Pedro Springs Park master plan, McAllister Fine Arts Center, St. Paul Square South Block improvements, San Antonio Police Officers Association, Borglum Studio Restoration, El Mirador Garden House, Via-Ellis Alley historic restoration, and Villas Del Norte alternative housing. Projects outside of San Antonio included the Nimitz Museum expansion in Fredericksburg, Texas, and the McFaddin Ward House Museum in Beaumont, Texas. The collection spans the years 1939 through 2007 and includes appointment books, sketchbooks documenting the architect's career, and assorted awards and diplomas.

Content Abstract: Winifred Swearingen was a co-founder of the San Antonio Woman's Club in 1898 and involved in other San Antonio organization. Patrick Swearingen was a prominent attorney in San Antonio, with business in south Texas and Mexico. This collection is composed entirely of correspondence. The bulk of the correspondence is between Winifred McCraw and Patrick Henry Swearingen, but there are also letters from other family members and friends.

Content Abstract: Target '90/Goals for San Antonio was a comprehensive community planning organization created to implement strategies for meeting San Antonio's economic, cultural and social goals. This city-wide organization was designed to bring together diverse civic constituencies to carry out the goals developed by the Target '90 Commission and United San Antonio. The records of United San Antonio, 1977-1984, include committee records and correspondence as well as information about various conferences which were sponsored or attended by United San Antonio. Information detailing United San Antonio's work with other groups is also included. The records of Target '90/ Goals for San Antonio date from 1971 to 1992 but the bulk of the material is from 1982-1989.

Content Abstract: The City of Terrell Hills is a residential community between Alamo Heights and Fort Sam Houston. In 1919, Dr. Fredrick Terrell sold the property to a group of San Antonio businessmen, who formed the Terrell Hills Community. This group established basic services in the area such as electricity. Terrell hills was incorporated as a town and elected a mayor in 1939. The City was established in 1957. The collection spans the years 1838 through 1956 and includes correspondence and other information about various projects and activities. Most of the material concerns the founding and early management, in the 1920s and 1930s, of the Community that would later become the City of Terrell Hills.

Positions included: Chairman, A Night in Old San Antonio, 1960-1961; President, San Antonio Conservation Society, 1961-1963 and 1971-1973; Director, Fiesta San Antonio Commission, 1961-1966; President, Texas State Historic Theatre Foundation of San Jose Mission, 1964; Vice-President, and founding member, San Antonio Arts Council, 1965-1966; President, Woman's Pavilion for HemisFair, 1966-1968; and Chairman, San Antonio Bicentennial Commission, 1975-1977. She received numerous citations for her work. The bulk of the collection documents the yearly conferences and consists of correspondence, marketing materials, notes, questionnaires, programs, and research materials.

Content Abstract: The Texas Nurses Association is a statewide membership-based association of registered nurses. Founded in 1907, TNA is the oldest professional nursing association in Texas. The records span the years 1916 through 2007 and consist of administrative records, clippings, correspondence, scrapbooks and printed materials. The bulk of the materials in the collection are administrative records, much of which relate to a particular committee of the organization.

Content Abstract: Texas Partners of the Americas is incorporated in the State of Texas as a non-profit organization: the first and largest state affiliate of Partners of the Americas, a private organization that develops leadership, understanding and opportunity in Latin American and the Caribbean through a network of volunteers. Texas Partners of the Americas' activities in Latin America includes sponsoring projects in health and education; providing training and study in emergency preparedness for counterpart organizations from Latin America; distributing books and textbooks to Mexican universities; and making surplus U.S. and state government property available to its Latin American partners. The group also sponsors quarterly socials in each region, coupled with informal and informational continuing legal education, to foster new and better relationships among women lawyers for business development, mentoring and friendship. Festival of American Folklife collection includes correspondence, news clippings, photographs and assorted printed material.

Velásquez was a Chicano movement organizer and the founder of the Southwest Voter Registration Education Project as well as a co-founder as the political party Mexican American Youth Organization and the Mexican American Unity Council. He is nationally recognized for his work including receiving The Presidential Medal of Freedom, the highest national honor any civilian can receive, and was only the second Latino to earn that honor. A scrapbook comprised of news clippings as well as a number of folders of news clippings, condolence cards, invitations, materials pertaining to the acceptance of the Medal of Freedom, and a few photographs.

Content Abstract: Esther Vexler, a native of San Antonio, was a yoga instructor and community volunteer. Esther Vexler did volunteer work with Jewish charities and was the first female president of the Jewish Federation of San Antonio. She also worked with the League of Women Voters and the Child Guidance Clinic, amongst others. Includes correspondence, memoranda, advertisements, clippings, newsletters, and reports; also included are meeting minutes, agendas, organizational lists, coursework, and Vexler's master's thesis.

Content Abstract: Vicente Filisola (1789-1850) was commissioned as Lopez de Santa-Anna's second in command during the campaign against Texas. After the defeat and capture of Santa-Anna at the Battle of San Jacinto, it fell to Filisola to evacuate Mexican forces from Texas despite heavy opposition from other officers, including José Francisco Urrea (1797-1849). Urrea replaced Filisola as general in command after the retreat, and was determined to continue fighting. However, due to Santa-Anna's orders, he was forced to withdraw. Collection contains nine letters and other documents by two Mexican generals concerning the Battle of the Alamo and the immediate aftermath of the Battle of San Jacinto.

Content Abstract: Arvella Bentley Vowell was a registered nurse who received her nurses training in 1929-1933. She worked full-time as a nurse in San Antonio, Texas, serving as a school nurse, private nurse, psychiatric nurse, and polio nurse. In addition, she was a visiting nurse at Kelly Field during World War II, a health nurse at Trinity University, and a staff nurse at Nix Hospital. She served as historian of the Texas Nurses Association, District 8, beginning in 1976. The Arvella Bentley Vowell Nurses Collection spans the years 1943 through 1994 and consists of clippings, correspondence, books, papers, a scrapbook, a ceramic lamp and a photograph. There is little biographical information, but there are clippings dating from the 1950s to the 1990s. The bulk of the materials consist of books from her personal library, most of which were published in the 1980s. These publications cover varying historical periods on nursing and important events in women's history, and two are signed by the authors.

Content Abstract: Willard Eastman Simpson Sr., one of the early pioneers in the emerging field of consulting structural engineering in Texas. The collection includes three photograph albums documenting the W.E. Simpson Company’s projects in building construction and civil-structural engineering around South Texas including San Antonio, Houston, Galveston and the Hill Country from the 1900s-1930s. Also included in the collection are photographs of later projects that date from the mid-1950s to the early 1980s.

Content Abstract: R. D. Warden joined the staff of his father's newspaper, the Great Falls Tribune, in 1925. He rose from cub reporter to executive editor and was part owner of the paper until it was sold in 1965. From that time until his death in 1979, he pursued his interest in Western art and history with his wife, Margaret S. Warden. Margaret S. Warden was involved in libraries and information services on the state and national level, and served as a Montana state senator. The collection spans the years 1835 through 1990 and includes brochures and maps for state and national parks of the Western and Northwestern states; art prints, gallery guides, exhibition catalogs, periodicals and prints (some reproductions) of art and artists of Western subjects; maps, government documents, tourist brochures, pamphlets, souvenir books, and articles about Native Americans and the cities and regions of the American West.

Content Abstract: The John William Warren Papers are composed primarily of correspondence but also include legal documents. Portions of these documents are in the Spanish language. The legal documents cover the period from 1902 to 1948. Included within the papers is Autos de General Visita de Orcasitas, a handwritten document from 1768. The John William Warren Papers represent Texas business relations with Mexico in the early twentieth century.

Content Abstract: The Washington family were members of a freedmen's colony in Cologne, Texas founded by George Washington and Joseph Smith. The collection is comprised of print materials related to property ownership and taxes. There are photographs of the family and their house, one piece of correspondence, and one fabric remnant.

Content Abstract: Richard Leigh Watkins was born circa 1878 and raised in Tennessee. Between 1910 and 1911 Watkins was business manager for the Beeville Manufacturing Company. Also in 1910 Watkins and five other men formed the Texas Title Guaranty Company. Watkins was active in a variety of associations and clubs in San Antonio, and in 1910 was one of the vestry of St. Mark’s Church. The papers consist of the papers of this San Antonio lawyer and reflect both his social and business life.

Content Abstract: Curtis Fisher Watters was a single parent in early 20th century Texas and was one of the first Certified Medial Records Librarians in the state. The Curtis Fisher Watters Papers document the life of an independent Texas woman and four generations of her family and friends through photographs, scrapbooks, books, correspondence, newspaper clippings, and ephemera.

Content Abstract: Matthew J. Wayner was a professor of neurobiology at the University of Texas at San Antonio. He became a faculty member with UTSA in 1983 and taught in the Biology Department until 2008. The collection contains general correspondence, correspondence documenting Wayner's position as editor-in-chief of academic journals, dissertations of students Wayner supervised, materials related to biomedical research support grants, research files, articles, conference files, materials pertaining to the establishment of a doctoral program in biology, appointment books, teaching notes, publications, and other materials.

One of the main purposes of this Council is to enhance client access to services in the community. By-laws, program planning and promotional materials, meeting minutes and directories document the Westside Service Resource Council from its beginning in 1992 up through 2005. The bulk of the records consist of meeting minutes, covering the period 1992-2001.

Content Abstract: Beck Whitehead is a San Antonio artist who served as Chair of Papermaking and Book Arts at the Southwest School of Art until 2016. Whitehead is a papermaker who creates paper paintings and one-of-a-kind books. The collection documents three of Whitehead’s book and paper arts projects undertaken between 2001-2018. It includes prototypes, mock ups, and test printing used by Whitehead in the creative process.

Content Abstract: Sebron Sneed Wilcox founded the Laredo Historical Society (Laredo, Tex.) and was a member of the Texas Historical Commission for Webb County, Texas. Wilcox was a Texas historian, writing several articles based on materials in the Laredo Archives. He worked as a court reporter for the Forth-ninth District in Laredo from 1911-1958. The Sebron Sneed Wilcox papers span the years 1749 through 1968 and consist of his collected and written documents regarding the history of Laredo, Texas. The papers consist of correspondence, Laredo history, lawsuit and trial transcriptions, speeches and documentation on the various celebrations held in Laredo.

Content Abstract: Robert Willson was an internationally known artist who was educated in the Southwest United States and Mexico. In his early twenties he studied in Mexico and was among the first American artists to adapt Mayan and Mexican folk art imagery in his art. Willson's later work merged Ancient Mayan imagery with Italian glass sculpture techniques. The collection consists of photographs from Robert Willson's two educational trips to Mexico, with a focus on the local people and culture. Also included are signed photographs of artists he befriended, and promotional flyers for Socialism in Mexico.

Content Abstract: The Woman's Club of San Antonio, a club organized for charitable work, education and fellowship, was founded on October 1, 1898. It is the oldest women's civic and social organization in San Antonio, and was the first women's club in Texas to endorse women's suffrage. Records document the structure, activities, interests, events, and business transactions of the Woman's Club of San Antonio. Of note are membership applications, 1937-1982; Fiesta programs, 1945-1994; and yearbooks, 1900-2016. The core of the Club's activities are documented in the records of the Roundtables.

Content Abstract: The exhibit originated as a Texas Sesquicentennial project funded at state expense through members of the Women's Legislative Caucus, a group consisting of women House members. The exhibit was first shown in 1987. In 1994, the exhibit was updated with funding by Patrick M.W. Johnson. Johnson and Kelly Martino of Houston collected new photographs, created, designed, and constructed the updated exhibit; subsequent updates were made in later years. The original exhibit was freestanding with images of women legislators mounted and matted on blue particleboard. To complete the exhibit, eight Texas artists volunteered their time and talent to sketch the portraits of women officeholders whose photographs were unavailable. The collection consists of 77 portraits of women who have served in the Texas legislature, as well as accompanying captions and credits displayed in the Women in Texas Government exhibit.

Content Abstract: The Women's Overseas Service League (WOSL) was founded in 1921 by women who had served in World War I. The group initially existed as local units, but soon became a national organization and began publishing the quarterly magazine Carry On. An annual convention was also established in 1921 and has been held every year except during the World War II years of 1942-1945. WOSL was the first women's organization to contribute to UNICEF and was one of the first organizations to be an accredited observer at the United Nations. The records of the Women's Overseas Service League document the everyday business and functions of the organization. The records include correspondence, minutes, reports, photographs, scrapbooks and printed materials. Insight into the organization is offered from a national and local perspective. The collection exposes the fundamental operations that were carried out by the members of WOSL.

Content Abstract: Sam and Bess Woolford were journalists and historians working in Texas in the twentieth century. The collection's manuscripts, research notes and other material document Texas history and folklore. A large number of Texas newspapers are also included. Most of the material dates from 1930-1975. Mr. Woolford wrote a column in the San Antonio Light from 1955 to 1975. The Woolford's Tales column spanned topics such as Texan archeology, Texan history and biographies of Texans. Most of these columns are in the collection. Additional writings by Mr. Woolford and his wife as well as their collection of Texana are held within this collection.

Content Abstract: Israel Worsham lived in Montgomery County in the Republic of Texas, served in the Texas legislature (1855-1856) and the Montgomery County Home Guard during the Civil War. In 1867, he wrote the description of Montgomery County for the Texas Almanac. The collection contains papers of Israel Worsham and his immediate family, and those of his great-great-granddaughter, Ella K. Daggett Stumpf, which deal with her research on Israel Worsham. Israel Worsham's papers, which are largely financial, are divided into seven series: Correspondence, Slave Sales, Financial Records, Political Involvement, Military and Veteran Records, Employment Agreements with Freedmen, Council of Laborers, and Election Administration Records. The papers of Jeremiah Worsham and other family members are correspondence.

Content Abstract: Natalie (Zoe) Wright served on the Board of Directors of the Woman's Pavilion at HemisFair 1968 in San Antonio, Texas, the first world's fair ever to be held in Texas. She was born in 1928 in San Antonio, living in San Antonio and Austin, Texas, for most of her life. She attended the University of Texas at Austin from 1945-1946 as a drama major. She has been active in several civic organizations including the San Antonio Conservation Society, Military-Civilian Club of San Antonio, San Antonio Art League, American Red Cross, and the Salvation Army. This collection is comprised of one scrapbook, compiled by HemisFair 1968 Woman's Pavilion Board of Directors member Zoe Wright. The scrapbook spans the years 1967 through 1968 and includes materials documenting HemisFair 1968, with a particular focus on materials generated by and relating to the Woman's Pavilion.

Content Abstract: The Young Men's Christian Association (YMCA) of San Antonio was created in the spring of 1886 with approximately 100 members. The YMCA of San Antonio was dedicated to putting Judeo-Christian principles into practice while building healthy minds and bodies. Activities included various exercise programs, educational programs and sports leagues, most of which were geared to serve the needs of boys and young men. The bulk of the collection is administrative records, such as the minutes of the Board of Directors, that illustrate the day to day operation of the YMCA of San Antonio. Material concerning the programs at some branches is also included.

The collection consists of prints and negatives produced by Jim Zintgraff of Rock Art sites along the Lower Pecos in Texas. The collection includes original negatives and prints made by the Zintgraff Studio. Images in the collection include downtown street scenes, businesses, movie theaters, film stars, parks, schools, the San Antonio Stock Show and Rodeo, and Fiesta San Antonio royalty. This collection comprises approximately 850,000 images.
